The Best Part of Living in Southern California

For our family, the cultural diversity available to SoCal residents is probably one of the highlights. From museums to food, Venice to the Valley, mountain biking and hiking to slopes and sand...we're very fortunate to have it all so close to our fingertips. I've lived here all my life and still find fresh things to see and do and experience! And really, the weather can't be beat, so I have to add that in.

My Favorite Local Kid-Friendly Activity

Day trips to different spots are a fun and fast way to experience Southern California. We love indoor places like the Griffith Observatory, The Getty and the California Science Center. Outside activities are only limited to our imagination! Hiking in Coldwater Canyon Park with Tree People, exploring the tidepools at Leo Carrillo beach, or having a picnic and biking around Lake Balboa in Van Nuys are all fun favorites.

The Biggest Challenge of Raising a Child Here

I think our largest challenge is similar for so many other parents regardless of the area. We have two boys, both in public elementary schools here in Los Angeles. For us, staying involved in and fighting for their continuing education is probably our current biggest (but rewarding) challenge. Every day, we are making sure they are ready for school, making sure they eat well at school (packed lunches vs. school food), making sure they are given the best educational opportunities in a resources-strapped school system, making sure they are challenged...and that's just the school! Looking out for their psychological welfare while in school is another aspect of the school challenge...all things I am sure other parents everywhere are facing too.
