What inspired you to start blogging?

We all found out we were going to be dads and realized that there really isn't anything useful material out there for dads. The books available at the time were either making fun of the whole situation without providing any real information or they were written entirely for mums. Either way nothing spoke to us — so we decided to do something about it and created DIYFather.

What makes your blog stand out?

We have learned the business of "helping dads" from the ground up — starting with courses for dads and receiving training from established childcare organizations. We have written two best-selling books with major publishers and have one of the longest running dad websites in the world (that is not relying on government grants or sponsors to provide services). But most importantly we have a "no preaching" rule and believe in providing "guilt free" information. Keeping it light wherever possible is also a big factor for DIYFather.

What are three adjectives that describe your blog?

1. Positive
2. Practical/pragmatic
3. Inspiring

What inspired you to start blogging?

When my son was born I started looking online to see what was out there for stay-at-home dads. My wife has been reading "Mommy blogs" for a while now and I wanted to know if there were any dads out there doing the same thing.

Needless to say I didn't find much. So I decided, why not me? My kid's ridiculously cute, we do interesting stuff, I can write above a 5th grade level, why not try it?

What makes your blog stand out?

First off, I've got one of the cutest kids to ever grace this Earth. That's a big head start. Second, I'm able to take everyday events and tie them into parental lessons in a way that will leave you nodding your head in complete agreement. Yeah, it's that good.

2. Poop-tastic
3. Humble

What are you doing when you're not blogging?

When I'm not blogging I'm doing the things I blog about. I'm taking care of Isaac while my wife's at work, I'm cleaning the house, doing laundry, all the fun things that need to be done around the house.

What inspired you to start blogging?

I've blogged for nearly seven years, but it was the birth of my first child two and a half years ago that really provided me the most significant inspiration to write. My sweet baby girl has proven both a magnificent muse and the greatest joy imaginable. Blogging provides a means of chronicling these, the most important years of my life.

What makes your blog stand out?

The primary value I hope my blog brings is in the interaction with other parents. One blog post may seek to enlighten or inspire, e.g. 6 Ways to be a Better Dad, and the next may just be designed to entertain, e.g. Things Guys Should Never Wear. The value comes from the conversations these posts start, both on the blog and also at home with my spouse.

What are you doing when you're not blogging?

My 'About Me' page describes me as, "a father, husband, technologist, writer, musician and leader in the field of distance education" in that order. The last in that list, working for a major university, puts food on my family's table, but I am so much more than my job. My most important roles are as daddy and husband.
