Put him in his/her own bed to begin with. Although with the 2nd, 3rd and 4th the bassinet was right next to the bed so I could reach over and touch them to make sure they were warm and so I could hear thier soft restful breaths. I was too ridgid with my 1st one on some things.

-
Kristin says:
This was a hard one that we went back and forth with. I just had to be consistent and keep putting him back in his room when he got up in the middle of the night. It required a lot of patience.
-
sandra says:
I never allowed him to sleep in our bed! He went straight from his crib to a toddler bed to a regular bed. He had his pre-bedtime routine of snack tv bedtime story prayers and that was always kept. He knew what to expect and never fussed about it. He would get up once or twice for the potty or a stuffed animal but that was all.
-
steph says:
we used the "it's time to sleep" video starting at about 9 months. Persistence is the key.

when he got to big for our bed, we made a ''special bed''(matress on the floor) and this was a happy compromise

-
Brianna says:
She can for like 4 hours, but then when she wakes in the middle of the night she wants us. Even to get her to stay in bed, we have to lay next to her till she falls asleep. Thankfully she's never slept in our bed/room.
-
alesia says:
ahahhahahahahhah no
-
Sara says:
Put a toddler bed right alongside your bed. And let him or her know that if they need to feel closer to me, then they have to sleep there on the toddler bed. After a while, they don't even wake in the middle of the night, and if they do, you still have your own bed free of little legs and hands in your side!
-
Alyssa says:

I started putting my kids in their own bed from day one! If I wanted to co-sleep I would have, but that was definitely NOT for me!
-
Jean says:
Hmm, they kinda just did that on their own.
-
Jennifer says:
Still working on that. Right now she watches tv in our bed and then cuddles with us until she falls asleep and then we put her in her own bed. She stays there until morning. Not happy with this plan, but it only started a week ago when she got sick. Next week is a new week!!
-
Tanya says:
Never really had a problem with this. She slept in her pack - n - play in our room for the first two months and then in her own crib. Last year when she was sick, she wanted to sleep in my bed. Not with me, just in my bed. To break her of that habit, I let her fall asleep on the couch and then put her in her bed. By June, she was MORE than ready to be out of her toddler bed and in a big girl (full size) bed. No problems with it.
-
Carly says:
My kids just did it. I know I'm lucky I have good sleepers.

-

huh well mine starts out there but sometime in the middle of the night seems to end up in our bed. I need to get better and getting up and just putting him back into his bed
-
Brittany says:
(i was bad at this) somewhere between making sure they fell asleep not in my bed and repeatedly putting them in their own after they fell asleep, and waiting till i felt they were old enuf to understand why they were in their own bed and not mine, and explaining it thouroughly to them and then forcing them to sleep in their bed. We also tried saying that in order to sleep w/ their comfort item (blankie, pillow or whatever) they had to have it in thier bed. They could come to our bed but blankie or pillow couldn't
-
LeAnna says:
I never let her sleep in my bed so there was never a problem.
-
Carin says:
When I figure that out, I'll let you know.
-
Karrin says:
humm well they normally do not stay in their bed every night but i read books and they start in their bed.... now sometimes they get in bed with me when daddy leaves for the day...
-
Joanne says:
make it nice and inviting with cute sheets, their favorite character and use a night light... let them know u will check on them in 10 min and do so, then make it 15 they're usually out by this time...oh and playing soft music in the lowest volume setting helps too
-
kathy says:
he has been sleeping in his own crib since the first week we brought him home :)
-
Erin says:
had another child...lol actually, because we had the baby in our room when she was born, we told the older one she had to sleep in her own bed so she wouldnt be awaken every 2 hours. Now with the big one, we wont get her in the habit of sleeping in our bed.
-
Jeanie says:
I told him that I was going to sleep in it and he could just sleep with daddy....that confused him enough to want his bed back - plus just being diligent about always kissing him, hugging him for a few minutes and carrying him back to his bed and being firm about him staying there. This takes getting up all night, but you have to. Patience!
-
Christina says:
lily has always slept in her own bed. except when she had a toddler bed and would fall off it cause it was too small for her lol then she'd run into our room and climb into bed. otherwise now she has a full size and hasnt fallen off it... yet haha
-
Nicole says:
she doesn't
-
Becca says:
I wish I could answer this but I can't, when I did have him in his own bed, I started with sleeping in his bed with him, than only being there until he went to sleep, than I just read him a book... But since I moved home to my parents, he is now sleeping with them
-

-
Amanda says:
She has always slept in her own bed. VERY rarely has she ever slept in mine.
-
Genevieve says:
they will do it on their own when the time is right
-
Rhoda says:
We had some challenges with this when the boys were toddlers because I used to let the boys crawl in bed with me when they're dad was deployed. We just firmly told them no and returned them to their own beds. They may wail and pitch a fit but just be firm, no eye contact, no extraneous words and don't give in. After about two times of this, they stopped. However, I think I softened the transition a little by taking the occasional nap with them and by letting them in the bed to read a book or watch a movie once in awhile.
-
Quinn says:
she was in her crib and asked her if she wanted a dora bed, after that we asked if she wanted a BIG GIRL BED...now she's in a twin on a box spring on the floor. only time she wants someone w/ her is when she's sick.
-
Kittie says:
didn't get him out or hold him every time he cried
-
Jade says:
she does ... may not have a lot of choice atm as she is only a week old but still
-
Melissa says:
She always slept in her own little bed. Even when I nursed her I put her back in her bassinette. After she got big enough to climb out of that we pt her in a crib and now she's almost ready for a toddler bed. We started at first by having her nap in her new crib then at night it was no big deal. When she cries, we check on her and sing and pat her but don't pik her up. now she sleeps all though the night and I check on her because she isn't making a peep.
