Ok. I need some opinions and advice!
The end of the school year is finally here. I've got an IEP in place at my son's school, and he's been getting extra help there with his math, speech, and social skills...but for the last two months...NOTHING! I've called the school and left messages for the special ed teacher to call me back so I can find out what is going on...and NOTHING! I've gone to the school to speak with her, but she's been "too busy" or "not there"! I honestly feel like the IEP that I have in place for him is nothing but a load of crap to his school! OH...and did I mention that I had to fight tooth and nail for them to accept the Aspie diagnosis in the first place? They tried to slap him with a "Mental Retardation" label! Anyway...I held him back in school last year (so he repeated the 3rd grade this year). I've spoke with his teacher and they are moving him on to the 4th grade. I'm concerned because when he was being pulled aside for the special ed classes, he missed out on certain parts of "3rd" grade that he would have been learning otherwise and preparing for the 4th grade...like cursive writing! My son excels at reading and writing...he does not do well at all in math!
My question...does anybody home school their Aspie child? Is it a good choice? I know that it's a choice that each person needs to make individually, but can anybody tell me what it's been like for them if they home school? Any advice, opinion, or anything would be SO APPRECIATED! He was diagnosed last year, and I'm still learning and working with him. In my head I keep thinking that me being able to control his learning environment would be a huge plus for him, but then I worry about him missing out on the social skills. I want so badly to protect him from all the bullying that he's been getting! (The school never did anything about that either-so much for their zero tolerance policy)! He's been called a baby, an idiot, a retard! It's horrible! By children in his class and by older children on the playground...because he prefers to play by himself! I just need some advice!!! Thank you!!!
