Do you ever get the feeling that atheists have far more theological knowledge than most "religious" folk ?

Yes absoloutley. The only reason Id ever go to church is bc there is no sense of community where I live at all and everyone is so stuck up. Religion was created to control ppl and there arent really many other options of organised groups and stuff. Like churchs you just walk right on in where else can you do that? They sure know how to suck ppl in!

Darcy, no, there is no evidence of creation. Those who believe in creation do so based solely on faith. Not to say that they shouldn't, that is their prerogative. There is, however, very strong evidence, and facts, supporting evolution.

Not only do I get the feeling, but I've witnessed just that, several times over. I think it's simply that atheists typically come to not believe in a higher power for the sheer fact that they've studied and done research, specifically in the science fields, which has given them a perspective that causes them not to believe. Most religious people don't really deeply study their religion, unless they become a member of the clergy (and sometimes not even then). The average religious person goes to church once a week, listens to a sermon, maybe attends a Bible study (or other holy book, but I assume you're referring to Christians specifically?) but they don't really educate themselves in other fields, and are often told by their church to reject certain parts of science. And I don't mean to offend anyone here, I feel like I can say this because my parents and grandparents are devoutly Christian, and I was raised to be Christian, and sometime during college, I just drifted away from it. I don't feel that Christians are stupid or anything like that, they just don't seek out the knowledge that has made an atheist believe what it is they do.

I think it depends on what you mean by "religious folk" I think people who are true and growing in a faith of any kind spends time learning about their God (s) and worshiping, are probably fairly well versed in at least their own religion. I think casual believers of any relgion may or may not be well versed in theirs or any other belief system. I believe it was PEW (not partisan group) did a study recently about this showing that in general Atheists tend to know quite a bit about various religions followed closely by those of Mormon faith. As a Christ follower with a true and growing relationship with the Lord I took the same test and scored near perfectly on the quiz. I found I'm not well versed in Calvinism. So I googled it! LOL!

Most atheists I know take a lot of time searching for answers. They don't just simply not believe in god, they want to know if there's some sort of proof or something they've never heard about that can change their ideas or give them a reason to believe in god. Personally, I know what my beliefs are. I'm not religious, but I love learning about different religions from a cultural aspect. I think it's really interesting.

i'm sorry to disagree with you darcy, but there is no "proof", there are STORIES of a god creating the earth (that cover multiple different religions) but no "proof". granted, there's no proof stating that evolution was the way everything came to be, so there are just THEORIES of how things got started, no PROOF of how it actually happened.

Well, I don't know much about religious folks. And there is proof that God created the earth, but non believers teach evolution as if it is fact.

i know that i am more prone to observe what other religions state is "the way", it's amazing how many religions are practically the same thing just with a different figure. they share a LOT of details/stories/"facts". i think that atheists are more accepting of what all the religions have to say b/c they mean nothing to atheists and atheists don't have a spiderweb of confusing and contradictory details to defend :)

i think because as athiests we want to more than the bible offers. Although i must say that i dont buy the big bang theory either. But i think we better understand our species with out chalking up horrible behavior to spirits, voices, and gods intention.

I would say on the most part yes.
Im very well read on theology mainly trying to figure out What it is that makes it so Appealing as for me the more a learn about it the less appealing and less logical it all is.

That's probably because many people who discover they are Atheist have tried to find some group to belong to. So we do some research and learn about all kinds of religions before we make our decision to declare what we do (or don't) believe.

I guess it goes both ways you either don't know or want to like yourself OR you are interested in it historically like myself , I have read the bible ...twice , epic story but that is all it is , I have also read Muslim , Buddhist , Hindu , and some smaller religious beliefs texts , I think it is fascinating from a historical point of view .

I find a lot of the time in debate when the bible is used as a shield to behave sub human it is the Atheists or agnostics that have a greater understanding or knowledge of the bible than those who preach it .

i can only speak for myself here... but personally i just dont giv much thought to god... i dont know how we got here nor do i care.. am here an thats wot counts. theres lots of theories but no one can prove anything either way so i feel like its a waste of time to even try :)... so as for theological knowledge for me goes.. none at all lol
