How to quote...

A few weeks ago, CoM took away the 'reply with quote' option. Why, I don't know. The code couldn't have been taking up that much space, but whatever.

So now, it's hard to differentiate who you're referring to in threads. This is easily resolved with an HTML tag. You can also use HTML to bold or italicize your comments, which makes it easier to make a point, as opposed to typing in CAPS like I am KNOWN to do. It looks like I'm yelling, and I might be, but most certainly not at you.

Tags live within < > . That's shift+ , or . on your keyboard. You always have to close a tag, < / tag > Since CoM doesn't give me a text only/no HTML tag, i can't actually show you what the tag looks like, but you will surely figure this out on your own.

So, let's say I want to to quote Lisa... When I type it, it looks like this, minus the spaces:

< blockquote >Arg I feel a troll urge coming on....< / blockquote >

And it looks like this:

Arg I feel a troll urge coming on....

And let's say you really want to punctuate what you are saying with great zeal:

OMG! My kid just puked up squash and breastmilk down my armpit!!

That looks like this, minus the spaces:

< b >squash< /b > < i >and< /i > < b >breastmilk< /b > (That's an actual text I sent a friend the other day. And yes, it was totally gross.)

As far as I'm aware, these are the only tags to work, which means you can't troll with scrolling goatse marquees, but only those of us from web0.8 would ever be so cruel as to do that in the TTAC community. Bummer.

So now you all can look like total smarty pants rock stars because you know how to quote and bold!

ps: Don't go Googling goatse if any member of your family or even small pets are in the same room as you. Also, be prepared to bleach your eyes out, post ice picking them, because the image will be burned into your brain for all time and eternity.

There is a German saying which I am going to translate and which exactly expresses what I am feeling:
"All I understand is train station"
means: "I have no clue what you are talking about!" But i will go into it in more detail tomorrow since I always wanted to know how to quote pieces of posts to that I want to refer to, which this is about right??? Help I need an emoticon with rolling eyes and steaming head and tongue out and hair falling out and......

AND, BBS or Unicode is different, so if you're on a forum, I suggest checking the little box to make your post different. It's really ridiculous that all the different msg boards can't use the same sort of coding.

CoM has very basic HTML stuff in their reply boxes, you can't even make an img src. And if you don't have the alt functions, it's '& hearts ;', minus the spaces and ' ' ♥

♥ oh duh, I just found the special characters function in Safari on my mac, thus I no longer even need to think about ALT symbols.
Definitely getting too old.

Hmm nup must be doing something wrong or just not working here. Sigh, back to the drawing board. Oh, I also was introduced to the concept of ALT symbols and emoticons but seem to be having trouble getting my mac keyboard to follow what I was told, or else doing something wrong there too.

Argh, I'm too old to be learning new tricks.
I'm definitely too old to be googling 'goatse'
Gah!

Ha ha, yes I bit as well, so ummm thanks for that.
Also thanks Traci for your coding advice. I have to post assignments on online forums for my study and as I use a mac, when I cut and paste from a word doc onto the moodle auto format forum it doesn't auto format for me so I have to do it manually. So you saved me much stress there as well. I also learned a few other tricks like dot points and coloured font but don't think they work here.
maybe?

Dude, I gave you fair warning!

Goatse has been around for probably over a decade.... Wow. That is really, really sad when I think about it.

IAWTL. That was pretty spot-on.

And you learned how to make a link in a href tag! Yaaaaaaay!

Sorry to bump this post back to the current view but I needed to reference some of your knowledge again Traci and this is the best place to practice it for me. Hope that this at least gives anyone reading a giggle...

A link lives in the HREF tag.

if you want to make a text link, it looks like this:

< a href="http://google.com" >I am linking Google< /a >

I am linking Google

It took away half of my post, wtf.

So, the only space you leave in that tag is A_SPACE_HREF. Remember if you are doing a text link, to close the tag with /a, otherwise your post will look all wonky. There are lots of other things you can do, like change the link color, make it strike-thru and all that jazz, but for simple purposes on CoM, the text link works just fine.

edit: Also, you don't have to repeat the whole A HREF in the close tag, just the /A. It's sort of confusing at first, but one you get the hang of it, you'll be knocking them off your fingers like you always knew what they were.

And I want to test something:

nope, guess you can't to img tags. Suck it, CoM. Here, tak dis. mak loneliness go away

Can anyone teach me how to create a link to other webpages or threads? Do I just copy and paste the url into the text of a post and it automatically becomes live (sorry, not the right lingo, I know) or do I need to do something else. Sometimes if I copy and paste a link it just comes up as regular text that you then have to copy to your web browser and sometimes it is blue and you can click on it and it takes you to the site. I know I am showing my ignorance here but I want to learn without having to learn too much (ie: research it myself).

As for the nested blockquotes, I always figured that they were stopped to try prevent people from directly attacking another poster. Not that it has, you just need to read all of the posts now to figure out who someone is having a go at.

Yeah, I miss the days of threaded LJ comments, it makes it so much easier to keep things straight in your head.

I didn't know any HTML worked on CoM, but came across a post in Welcome...! that is long buried by now. I can't imagine that the nested blockquotes was really causing that much chaos, but it was confusing when people weren't quite sure how to use it right, and you had to sift through the quotes to get the reply. Eh. What can you.

Still, no scrolling goatse marquees. Sad :(

Thanks for posting this! I'll show my geek stripes and admit I used to code a personal website back in the day, using all old-school HTML, so I knew about the bold and italics...and I figured out the block quote thing from editing my posts (it showed all the HTML). I'm ticked that they took away the blockquote thing, but I think it's because people were quoting like 3-4 layers deep and it was making each page of threads sooooo long. They should have limited the nesting in blockquotes...or even better, make this board a threaded board!! That would rock.

I wish that half of what you said made sense to me. I feel like a bit of a technophobe right now, but am going to give it a try as I am supposed to be of the technically savvy generation x.

You will still have to copypasta and blockquote it, but at least the person you are talking to will know that you are referring to them.

No, go ahead and test it all!

As far as I know, you can't do it in a PM. And be sure to close yr tags < / tag >, apparently not closing tags screws up the whole thread. Weird. Code in CoM is all wonky.
