I agree with what everyone has said about all babies being different. My latest bub (now 4 weeks) slept from 10.30pm till 5am from when we came home from hospital & for the last week has slept from 9pm till 5am (6am this morning). But my first child didn't do this for a couple of months, my 2nd woke every 40mins to an hour for the first 12 mths (12 long harrowing months!) & finally slept through the night at 4 yrs old, my 3rd woke every 2-3 hours for 6mths then had the nightmare hourly waking pattern for a few moths then slept through at about 14mths. We are totally luxuriating in this one's sleep pattern. The only draw back is that my boobs feel like they will explode by morning & I have to sleep with a towel because they leak but I'm too scared to wake him for a feed in case I set off a disturbed sleep pattern - paranoid, I know :(

Well my first didn't sleep through once until he was 11 months old, and still doesn't always (he's almost 4 now): that said, even my husband sometimes gets up in the middle of the night and heads to the kitchen for a snack! My second son is now approaching 5 months, and, although he still needs a couple of night feeds, sleeps soooo much better than my eldest did, it's like I've hit the jackpot, so I'm not too worried about when he'll sleep through (though of course it will be nice when he does!).

None of mine slept through the night until at least 9 months old. My daughter still needed her night feedings until she was 14 months old.

Geralyn that is good to hear! I just posted about my son nursing all night long. On the Jan 2009 board there is a post where all the moms are saying their babies are sleeping 6+ hours. Not one has a baby who wakes up as much as Max. I keep forgetting that not everyone is co-sleeping & breast feeding. It's good to be reminded that we're not abnormal!

Hi Yesha. Like most things, it really varies from baby to baby. Some babies sleep throughout the night from almost the beginning. Then, I've heard of babies sleeping through the night early on only to wake up at night when they are older. There are so many things that factor into it.
My son turned 1 in early April. He has slept with me since Day 1. Since about 4 weeks of age, he has slept well duing the night with nursing for up to 5-10 minutes 3-4 times a night and go right back to sleep. Some people may not consider that sleeping through the night because he nurses, but for me, its been very good. I at least sleep pretty well. Usually, I think he's "checking in" rather than eating because he's hungry. I see him becoming a better sleeper and a more confident sleeper.

Depends on how they are fed and where they sleep. Breastfed/bed-sharing babies may not sleep through the night until after the first year. Bottlefed/co-sleeping (same room/different bed) babies may sleep through the night before six months (I've met some that were 3 months). And all the variations in between leave a large window for sleeping through the night (not to mention how the baby's temperament figures in).
But, some cultures value independence in very young babies/infants and others do not. The Japanese culture (in general) believe children should be more dependent at a young age in order to be more independent as an adult. Which make sense to me.
