LOL, Karen, one thing I wasn't worried about was the license. I figure the longer I keep my son off the road, the better, lol. That's silly I know. Cody is as tall, if not taller than all the 4 year olds in his class, but again, I wanted him and my niece to go to school together for a year, to kinda help him out too. He knows all his letters, numbers, etc, and I just wanted to give him the chance. He'll go to the same class again next year.

Terry, that's my daughter's birthday too! I appreciate everyone's comments. She is small, but not the smallest in her 3k class, however, some of the kids tell her she isn't a 'big girl' yet because she is shorter than them. She will never be tall, so she will always have to deal with those types of comments. But I do worry about sending my baby to college at 17. Yikes! And what about being the last one to get their license, etc. I know it sounds ridiculous, but her high school years are the ones I am most concerned with. Being the youngest, would she more likely to be a follower? If she is the oldest, would she be more likely to be a leader? I should also add that almost all of my friends and my sister have children that would be in her class if I hold her back. RRRRRRGGGHHH!

I am struggling with trying to decide when to send my son to kindergarten as well. His birthday is the 29th of August and is a big boy. He is 90%-tile in height and weight and already is the biggest kid in his preschool class. He already knows most his letters and numbers and is beginning to write letters. I just don't want him to be the biggest kid in school and am afraid to hold back if he is academically ready. Suggestions welcomed!

Hi Karen,
I have a 3 year old boy born August 2005 and what I've learned from watching his older sister start Kindergarten at 4 (she has an October Birthday) is that even thought she is mentally ready she will always be the shortest and smallest, and that has caused some problems already. I think that for a boy being the smallest those problems would be worse beacuse of the steryotype placed on boys. So, even though there is a 3 year age gap between the kids there will be a 4 year school gap and my son will be older than most. I also think that boys cannot physically sit still to learn in a traditional setting until they are physically ready, so having a boy be a year older woulld benefit him.

Karen, my son is also a summer baby and we put him in prek this year. He is also the youngest in his class, and the only reason we started him was because my niece (who is 4) was going to be in the same class as him. This also means he will graduate at 17, so I know what you mean. But, this also gives you leeway, in the future, in case you do need to hold her back for some reason. Not to say you would, but if she is happy in class and seems to be doing well, let her go! And if she has problems, in say, first grade, you have the option of holding her back a year and it probably won't hurt her a bit. This is just my opinon.

Hi Jessica. Great idea! We live on the gulf coast of Alabama. My little girl was born at the end of August. She's doing fine in her 3k class, but she is the youngest and we were tossing around the idea of holding her back in school. She is a quick learner, but I worry about her being mature enough as she gets older. Does anyone have any thoughts?
