I absolutely agree with Amanda, interest should be your first clue that he's ready to start trying. I actually work as a two's teacher so I do a lot of potty training, and I've had kids who potty trained at 18 months and kids who didn't until they were 3, the key really is when they're interested pounce on it and be consistant about it. My daughter in the last two weeks has randomly decided she's ready, she pulls down her pants, sits on the potty and GOES!! Its awesome. I was planning to wait until she was closer to 2, but the interest is the important part... :-)

Hi, my son is almost 18months and we have just bought him a potty. We figured there were signs there - like he knows when he is doing something in his nappy and he is very interested in the toilet (he says 'wee' and 'poo' when he sees it). We're not forcing it on him but it's there and he sits on it a couple of times a day but hasn't done anything in it yet!! I don't think there is a right age, I think it's just when they are interested in learning about it and then you just encourage their interest. :-)

I'd wait. when u start that early you spend so much time trying to get them to understand the concept.... had you just waited until they were a little old ... maybe 2 1/2... they would get the concept in a few days.

My son's almost 18mo too. We started trying to potty train him at christmas. Needless to say we're still working on it because he tells us when he needs a new diaper but not before hand. As long as he kind of realizes what the potty is for go for it.
