Temper Tantrums

Our little girl, Shayla, has just turned three. She has always been very strong-willed and confident, extremely independent and these things we have nurtured in her and have pointed these values in a positive direction.

We never had any big problems with tantrums, no supermarket meltdowns or church disasters...until now.

She started afternoon kindergarten about a month ago, so afternoon sleeps stopped, but they'd become sporadic anyway, and she is now going to bed earlier at night.

We can't work out any real reason for these huge explosions of anger and we don't know how to deal with it.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Oh.. life with a three year old :) My son is also three and is prone to throwing tantrums for apparently no reason. I know there are quite a few resources out there for parents offering ideas on dealing with tantrums. Do you think part of the problem is that she is overtired (since she is now at school and not napping?) I do notice my son throwing way more tantrums when he is tired and/or hungry. I recently wrote an article on tantrums that cites some resources for parents. I found them helpful... if you are interested check them out at

Hi! My daughter is the same age and I have got her out of this behaviour by taking other moms' advice on this site!!! With Mackenzie just by using 'When you...' instead of 'If you...' has helped SOOOO much it doesn't seem plausible! I also speak to her calmly when she is having an explosion and ask her to tell me what is bothering her in words...that I will wait (in the kitchen etc) until she is feeling better and wants to come and chat. It has taken a while but she is completely out of tantrums in about one month of getting her to verbalise her feelings more. Good luck! These little Leo girls are quite something...so beautiful, independent and strikingly charming. Aren't we lucky they have such wonderful characters ;) Good luck!
