My husband I just had a huge discussion about this for our son's party (tomorrow actually). We both have family's who drink at almost all functions, and we do drink and enjoy it responsibly. However, I agree with one of the posts above which is the day is about my baby, not about us having a beer. I didn't even want to chance anyone getting out of hand from having too much to drink because I don't want anything to taint my baby's first celebration. But my birthday is coming up and I will be having a little something for myself, I can wait til then!

we are not drinking alcohol. i am not totally against or think lowly of people who do. but i guess my take on it was, this day is about her and the other kids' fun...not mine. i just want to enjoy the day with my little one... drinking if for other occasions

I was very much looking forward to my glass of champagne! - my twins first Birthday party was as much of a celebration for my husband and I getting through the first year as it was for the boys (well actually the boys had no clue what all the fuss was about!). But I trust and know all my friends and know they are responsible so I knew we could enjoy and celebrate our sons together with our friends, in an adult appropriate way.

Nothing wrong with it at all. Like others have said, if you know your guests and know they won't get out of hand what does a few beers hurt. We has my son's party 2 weeks ago and had beer and Cosmos. We had a backyard BBQ as well and it was great fun. A party for a 1 year old is more for the adults anyways.

we have had beer at many birthday parties for my kids. especially the bbqs. as long as everyone can drink responsibly then there is nothing wrong. but if you know you have some guest who have a history of getting out of hand then i would be cautious. we have even been to parties for my nephew at chuck e cheeses and they order a pitcher of beer for the guys.

We had beer at my son's party. I agree that it's more of a get together for the grown-ups!

It's a bbq, how can you not have drinks? doesnt mean your guests have to get drunk. we had a 1/4 barrel of beer for about 30 people. it was a lot cheaper than buying bottles of beer. for the first birthday the kid doesnt really understand what is going on anyway, it is more of a way for the parents to act social again!

personally i think its a little inapproopriate to serve alcohol at a childs birthday party.. there are many other opportunities to relax and enjoy a drink.. you just never know how people react after a few drinks...

If you and your friends drink provide alcohol. Many of my friends enjoyed a beer or a cocktail at my sons party. I even had one to relax myself from going crazy over every detail!! Many non-parent friends can get pretty bored at a 1st birthday party. They just socialize with the other non-parents. I found it very helpful. I had cocktails, beer and wine for each style of drinker at my party. HAVE FUN!!
