Car Troubles...

My daughter, Brenna, is 9 weeks old and absolutely HATES the car!! Everytime she gets in, she screams until she either hypervenalates, or chokes on her spit. It's so nervewrecking. She works herself into such a state that by the time we get where we're going, she's shaking, hot, and is soaking wet from cold sweats. I guess it would be ok if she was a homebody, but she hates being home, too! I know most babies love the car, but Brenna doesn't. We have to travel to my inlaws for Thanksgiving and I can't get her in the car. My mother-in-law is already starting to think I'm making this up so I don't have to go to her house, but it's true and I really don't want to upset my husband's mom any more than I have to...ya know? But....we'll both be a basketcase by the time we drive an hour. She won't take a passy, bottle, or anything. If I sit back there with her, she screams worse, and she's too young for benedryl....got any suggestions?

I am kinda glad my baby isn't the only one, ya know? I was wondering about the other convertable car seats that aren't carriers, let me know if it helps! I'm thinking it's just the whole concept of riding backwards, but, I'm willing to try anything!!

My son does the exact same thing! He's pretty good in the carrier but as soon as we put him in the car and close the door he starts wailing. Doesn't matter if I sit in the back with him or not. The only thing that helps a little is that he will sometimes take a bottle so then he is ok and will fall asleep. I guess we should try out our other car seat that is not the carrier type and see if that works any better.

My daughter is exactly the same way. She starts screaming the minute her carseat is attached to the base. I think it is the travelling backwards that bothers her. We still haven't figured it out but the crying is getting to be less each time she goes in the car.

Thanks, yeah, the doctor has no idea either. She likes the carrier, believe it or not. She'll sit in it, awake, all through church, and if she is asleep in it, she can sleep for up to an hour in it, in the house, just not when it's attached to the base in the car. It's the weirdest thing! The only thing we can some up with is carsickness? Maybe going backwards bugs her? If so, I guess we just have to deal with it until she's old enough to be turned around...yuck...I'll try putting her in it more often and feeding her right before, I usually try to put her in right after she falls asleep, but it's hard to plan the return trip around naptime too. I can plan it for the ride to whereever, but it's the drive back...I can't always be certain she's tired then...you know?

Do you feed her right before you leave?? Is your car seat also a carrier? If so, maybe try putting her in it a few times during the day outside of the car so she get's used to it? It does sound like she's really uncomfortable...I would also maybe check with your doc about what might be going on. Good luck?!
