My 18 month old found out how to climb out of the crib and I am terrified that she is going to seriously injure herself. What should I do?

My son started to escape and we learned to get him out quicker since he isnt ready for a toddler bed yet. But we had to take the short side off the crib and put that against the wall and put the foam matress off of our bed and against the tall side of his bed and keeps the bed from moving to where he cant push the bed away from the wall and climb out that way. I hope that helps.

He stayed in his bed from the beginning. We would lay him down in his bed and sit in the rocking chair until he fell asleep the first couple of nights and then he was good after that. It did take him a little longer to sleep in the bed during nap times, but he eventually got the hang of it too. The first 2 nights he fell out of bed in the middle of night and we would just go in and put him back in bed and he went right back to sleep. If you are scared of your child falling out just put a mattress on the floor the first couple nights so they get use to not being in the crib.

How long did it take you to get him to stay in his bed?

I moved my son to a toddler bed at 14 months, you might want to try that.

Our daughter did the same thing here awhile back. The advice I got was to either turn her bed into a toddler bed which I really don't want to do yet or buy one of those nets that you can put over the top of their crib so they are not able to climb out and hurt themselves. Our daughter is still not sleeping through the night so when I get up to rock with her for 10-15 minutes and put her back down if she begins crying I can tell when she is so mad that she is ready to climb out, I then go in her room and sit in the rocking chair and it seems to comfort her just knowing I'm there. After a bit I slip out of the room. My daughter is so different from my son. He was never a climber. She climbs the kitchen chairs and everything else she can manuever. It is scary because you worry they are really going to get hurt. Good luck.

If you use the Crib Tent II (NOT the basic one), there is no way anyone or anything can get in or out of the crib without using the zipper, which is on the outside. The tent is like a sack that encloses the whole crib from the inside.

My 18 mos old son just went into a big boy bed this week. He figured out how to climb in and out of the crib. I tried the tent as well but it didnt work, I was worried he would get to that too. So, we moved him to a twin bed and today is one week. We have the bed up agianst the wall with an extra long gard on the side and the first few nights were rough but the last few have been good. He loves the bed and we have been making a big deal about it when he sleeps through the night. My pedi told me once they know how to get in and out of the crib it is time to make a change. Good Luck!

You might want to try the Crib Tent II. It will help keep your baby in and pets out.
My daughter has been in hers since the day we brought her home from the hospital and it's been wonderful keeping the cats out and now that she is 18 months, it works keeping her in and preventing her from a) falling out out of her crib and b) wandering the house unattended at night.
You want to try to keep your baby in their crib for as long as you can, because once they move into a big kid bed, a whole new set of problems will arise.

My little girl is not quite 18 months and she's been in a single bed for 2 months now. She sleeps wonderfully and so do we finally. We figured out it was the bars to the crib that was actually upsetting her. She connected that they were similar to the gate as in to keep her 'in'. Our little ones are smarter then we give them credit for. We chose a single bed over a toddler one as we knew we'd need a bed for her eventually and had heard story after story about toddler beds being a pain as they can't hold the weight of a parent so...no bedtime story or snuggle. Ikea has awesome kids beds all kinds. We bought the mattress at Costco, single sealy for $200.

I just moved my 18 month old to a twin bed this past weekend!!! Sounds like she's ready! My son is on cloud 9!! He only fell out once (the first night) and is adjusting wonderfully! Good luck!

I had to move my little one to a toddler bed when she was 16 months because she was climbing out of the crib. Now that she's in a toddler bed it's great. She's happier and sleeps better. It's a huge change but it's worth it knowing if she does hurt herself it will be minor, where as if she climbs out and hurts herself from her crib then it would probably mean an ER visit.

my daughter (she is now 3.5 yrs old) at 18 months did the same thing. Have you tried one of the crib tents? I wound up taking my daughter out of the crib by 21 months since it got so bad with climbing out. She would fling herself out.
I have an 18 month old son, who has not done this yet. Thank goodness! But coming out of a crib at 21 months was very hard. Too much freedom to come out of bed and go for midnight walks!! LOL I would definitely do the crib on the tent for my son. I wish I had stuck with it with her, even though she cried and hated it at first. I gave in way too soon with taking her out of the crib.
Good Luck!

Everything i've read says that the first time they climb out of their crip, its time to move them to a bed/toddler bed. Some people say to put a gate on their bedroom door then, so they can't roam around the house. That the fall from the crib will be much worse than if she was in a toddler bed. just make sure everything is toddler-proofed!

I kow some moms but a bed tent to put over the crib. Or if you think she is ready you could just move her to a toddler bed.
