Feeding Baby cereal

Hi, I just started feeding my daughter baby cereal. I mix it with formula and a bit of milk as advised by my doctor. The only problem is that she will have a maybe a tablespoon or a bit more in total then start crying for her bottle. She will then drink about 5oz from her bottle. So I am not sure if she is just really hungry and grows impatient with being spoon fed or just doesn't like the taste of the cereal.

Is there any suggestions on how to get her to eat a bit more cereal? I am worried that she will continue this behavoir once she starts eating veggies, etc... Or is this a normal behavoir? Should I add some apple sauce to it?

Just keep trying, try to feed an hour after a bottle. Mix with milk to make it sweeter, I wouldnt try applesauce this early....... I would say getting them used to bland foods first before eating sweet ones is always recomended.

Everyone seems to be saying the right things. Everything I've read says not to worry if they only eat a few bites. They are just learning, and breastmilk or formula is their main source of nutrition still. After a while, they get the hang of it, and then they'll lap it up.

These ladies have it down.  We just started 2 weeks ago with cereal and she just spitted it all out the first couple days which is perfectly normal.  After a few days a little bit more would accidently get down.  Starting week 2 she started sucking the spoon and likes it.  We add breast milk to ours so either that or formula or water.  Water makes it taste like wall paper paste so try and stick with formula.

But make sure to try this about an hour after being fed.  That way shes hungry enough to be interested by not straving to be cranky.  Good Luck and be persistent and patient.

Quoting Dalila:

in the beginning - my doc also advised to just feed cereal when baby is not too hungry - hour or so after a bottle so this doesnt happen - worked for me...

I totally agree with the above, I started my son when he is not hungry since it is a new experience for them, it also worked for me.  When they are hungry they won't feel like trying something new!

I mix Graces' cereal with a apple juice in the morning- instead of milk. I mix it with milk in the evening. It took her a while to get used to the apple juice though.

I only feed her what she will eat. Milk is still her main source of nutrition. I would just keep trying a little bit more everyday. It is something totally new to her. Grace did the same thing- I just started out small and if she started to cry I immediately stopped feeding her cereal. I wanted it to be a positive experience for her.

Also- The dr. advised that I feed her a full feeding and then half an hour to a an hour later try giving her some cereal.

Also :) There are other people out there that suggest skipping the cereal altogether. Some start on fruit or veggies. Wholesomebabyfoods.com says the best solid food to start baby on is avocado! Weird- but she loves it! Stick with one food for about 3 days (to see if she gets an allergic reaction) then try another....
