First Rice Cereal Attempt

Our baby boy was born August 6th. Our pediatrician said we could start giving him rice cereal so we tried it for the first time today. It did not go well. =( I think the problem was that he wanted to eat it too quickly and I couldn't give it to him fast enough because we made it pretty milky and the spoons are so little. He ended up throwing a fit and then wouldn't eat any. It was just disheartening because I was really hoping that this would be a picture perfect event with lots of smiles. Anyone else have a similar experience?

Our little boy is also born on the 6th too, I gave him baby rice at 17 weeks, and he was the same. I kept trying, he's on 2 meals now. It does get better honestly

We feed our daughter her cereal and fruit/vegetables about an hour after she takes a bottle. That way she is not so hungry she'll get upset if she's not fed fast enough.

try feeding them part of a bottle first so they aren't acting like they are starving, then feed the cereal, i had the same problem with my 2 and 4 yr old. i figured out that if i gave them some of a bottle first and then fed them cereal it worked out alot better.

We started putting some in her bottle first and sometimes now about and hour before bed we give her a little bit more so practice swallowing and gettting down the motions of using a spoon. I think its going well and she likes its more solid then soupy.

we had the same thing happen with both of our daughter's ( I have one @ 5 yrs and one @ 4 1/2 months) we just made the rice a little thicker and it took them a little longer to swollow it. try this it might work for you.

That's better than mine did. We tried to give it to him a week or so ago and he wouldn't eat it at all. I was hoping he would like it so it would help him sleep even better through the night. But no such luck. If I managed to get any in his mouth, he just spit it out. I'm going to give it another go around soon, but you did better than me:)

The same thing happened with our daughter (born on August 18th). However, she's been on cereal since she was 3 months. What we found that worked was to either give her a bottle (milk), and add cereal to it. We also (at times when she was fussy about eating from the spoon) would let her drink some milk, then feed her a little cereal. She's fine now- she eats the cereal from the spoon (during the day)., as well as one new fruit or vegetable a week. We give her a cereal bottle at night, however.

Thanks for all the replies. We finally gave it a second attempt today and it went pretty well. I nursed him a bit first so he wasn't starving and we also put him in his high chair (since we finally assembled it). The first few spoonfuls were a bit odd for him but after a bit he seemed to get it, and even enjoyed eating it. Hooray!! =)

Hope you all had a Happy Holidays!

i kind of had the same experience. It seems if he is really hungry he'll wine and fuss and fight it. so, i guess the goal is, give him the cereal a little before feeding time, before he gets really hungry. my dr also said, it's ok to add a baby spoon full or two of fruit, the gerber stage1 fruits. hopefully that help. it seems pretty normal what he's doing.

We had a similar experience - our son ended up eating it, but didn't seem like we could give it to him fast enough. I have to agree it might be good to take the edge off a bit until he gets the hang of it. We've thickened it up a bit, and even while a good amount gets on the bib, face, hands - we're getting the hang of it. Just keep up the good work - it'll get better!!!

I tried my little girl who was born on 23 August on rice cereal yesterday. Although I had given her some milk before so she wasn't mega hungry. She cried, spat it out over me then laughed. I am just going to try again today.

Our little guy did the same thing. We tried again the next day BEFORE we knew he would be hungry. He's been having for a week or so but it seems if he is starving he would just prefer his bottle. It took a couple of days for him to get the hang of it. You can also try to give him a bit of bottle (or breast) before his cereal so he isn't too hungry to concentrate. It will get better, just stick with it.
