Flu shots & H1N1 vaccine? Are you getting one for your baby?

Hi there. We have 6 children ages 13.5yrs - 15mths and our 2nd oldest is a kidney transplant recipient. Due to her condition, we all had to get both flu shots (seasonal & H1N1). We got them 11days ago & none of us had any problems. The 15mth old seemed to get along the best. Everyone else seemed to have soreness at the needle site but he was fine. I believe the benefits of not getting either flu certainly outweigh the possible risks. We spent 3mths at our daughter's bedside when she was being treated for her kidney disease & waiting for transplant & we were 5hrs away from home and until you've been through something like that you can't appreciate the fear & terror of being unable to help your child. Anything that prevents that kind of sickness in a child is worth getting or taking.

There is no way you can get the flu from the flu shot.. They are either dead viruses that the body can make antibodies to or weakened to the point that they will not cause infection UNLESS there is some underlying problem, like maybe there is already a trace of the virus, sick with something else, or have a generally weakened immune system. Plus, if it is a "seasonal" flu shot, there are other strains of the "flu" flying around everywhere, and the companies that make the flu vaccinations can only include so many strains in the shot. Like I said, it mutates very readily and seasonal vaccines are effective for only those in the vaccine. The swine flu vaccination however is for ONE particular strain and will be effective against the H1N1 strain of the flu. You can opt for the shot which is not live attenuated organisms. It is the nasal spray that has the live virus, but once again, very weakened so as to not cause any problems unless there is something already underlying.

I say that you should get it for your son my son is 15 months and I am geting him and myself one. I was told by his doctor that all small children and babys should get it cause they are in the high risk group.

I've never had a flu shot, because the one time my mother had one she got hit with the flu hard the next day. So I'm not going to get my son a flu shot either. And I agree with Kimberly I'm not giving my son a shot that is not well tested.

Ok, I don't know how helpful this may be, but I am working on finishing my degree as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist ( a glorified Medical Technologist) at The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston and they have stated that the reason WHY they are doing this vaccine is because if it mutates ONE more time, it will cause hemorrhagic effects and will be twice as deadly as it is now. They are trying to STOP this new strain of flu so it does NOT have the chance to mutate again. So, by getting the vaccine, you are not only protecting yourself and your children, you are protecting others. All it takes is ONE STRAIN to meet with another strain conjugate and form the strain we in the medical profession have all been worried about. Which is why we now have MRSA (methycillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus).. you may think it takes a lot to mutate, but it really doesn't. They come up with new vaccines for the seasonal flu every year because it mutates so readily. My best suggestion is to go ahead and get the vaccine.. maybe not if you are pregnant, but the chances of contracting the flu or having side effects are very rare.. I think the cdc.gov has good statistics or flu.gov has some about the chances of side effects from getting this vaccine. All in all, after everything is said and done, every vaccine has its side effects and they are USUALLY VERY RARE as is the same in this one. It is thought that not enough testing was done for this one, but as stated above, they redo the flu vaccines every year and they would not give out a vaccine they were not sure about. Please, protect your loved ones and others and get yourself and your children the H1N1 and seasonal flu vaccines.

hi there! just another opinion mixed with some cold hard facts. first of all, the regular flu shot never covers all of the strains of flu that will be going around that year. the shot is meant to cover mostly respiratory flus that are potentially more dangerous than other strains. in regards to the H1N1 flu shot, it is a very specific kind of strain that is being targeted because it is that strain that has been associated with all of the deaths of recent. if you consider what the risks are of not getting the H1N1 shot, you must consider serious illness that could be debilitating and even death, especially with younger children. this strain also targets young adults, and so if you are taking care of kids, you are putting them at risk as well! i have always questioned whether i want to get a flu shot in the past since its protection is hit or miss, but recent studies have shown that the efficacy of the H1N1 vaccine is extremely high. I am not willing to accept responsibility for spreading the sickness to my kids, or potentially causing harm to my family. i also don't trust that the general public will wash their hands constantly, and sneeze into their elbows, and take off work when they are sick. my son, myself and my husband have gotten the shots, and had very little side affects. my arm was sore. but i put ice on it and sucked it up. i'm very happy that i went through with it.

My son has already had the seasonal flu shot and will absolutely be getting the H1N1 vaccine as soon as it available in our area. Both flu vaccines are made from dead virus and therefore, CAN NOT make you sick. Any medical professional will tell you that IF you get the flu in the 2 weeks following the shot, it is simply because it takes 2 weeks for the vaccine to become effective - the vaccine can NOT cause the flu. As for the safely of the H1N1 vaccine, the entire medical community insists that children over 6 months of age desperately need to be vaccinated for their safety. I know we, as mothers, are protective of our children but we need to trust the thousands of doctors who have years of experience and therefore, know much better than we do what is best in this case. It is arrogant of us to think we know better than the entire medical community when they have dedicated their lives to help keep us healthy.

My doctors pushed it. I researched online and there have been many miscarriages after the H1N1 vaccine but they haven't been reported since it is hard to say what caused the miscarriages. I don't have an answer for you, but a friend of a friend just had a miscarriage 2-3 days after getting the shot. She was 7weeks. She had no previous history of m/c... No one can answer if they're related...it hasn't been out long enough and there haven't been any studies done on pregnant women. I will tell you, that it has made up my mind on getting it...I won't and I'm not going to get it for my DD either. My daughter and I both had H1N1 last week, and although it truly sucks...I think I'll take my chances. my heart goes out to you as i recently miscarried as well and was due in june. i had a healthy heart beat at 6wks. then at 7.5 wks my son got the h1n1 mist vaccine which has live vaccine in it. the nurse said to be careful b/c it could technically spread if he rubbed his nose and touched a surface etc. the next night i miscarried and 5 days later was diagnosed with h1n1. i work from home, kids are home, hadnt been anywhere during that time. so the chances that it is all related are very high. the flu mist vaccine warns for immunocompromised patients (which includes prego) to stay away from recipients of the flu mist for 21 days.

I also agree something needs to be done and looked more into with this vaccination because most women are being advised it’s just something that happens, but I also had two healthy children normal pregnancies and when I received this vaccination with my third pregnancy, my baby is gone.

I received the H1N1 vaccine on October 16th and started experiencing cramping on the 22nd. I was nearly 17 weeks pregnant and gave birth to a stillborn baby boy on the 23rd. Like many of the other women here, the first thing I suspected was the H1N1 vaccine. I immediately asked a nurse at the hospital if that would have anything to do with it. Without hesitation, she told me “absolutely not.” I had reservations about getting the vaccine, but followed the advice of my long trusted family doctor. In a follow up appointment with my doctor 3 days after I lost my baby, I asked him if the vaccine would have had any adverse effects on my baby. He also said that it was not possible. I don’t believe that my doctor was necessarily lying to me, he was simply following the accepted practices and opinions of his field. I do, however, believe that as a nation, we are being lied to. This vaccine is NOT safe during pregnancy. There has not been enough testing done to determine this and there are far too many “coincidences” for this to be anything but a result of a vaccine that was hastily pushed into production and distribution in an effort to stop widespread panic. I have read so many stories in defense of the vaccine that will talk about how common miscarriages are, but I would challenge you to ask ANY health care professional how common second trimester miscarriages are. My baby was doing perfect developmentally and I had felt him move earlier that day. My heart goes out to all of you out there who have had to go through the same heartache and loss that I have had in the last couple of weeks. There is no reason that any woman or family should have to go through this. Get the word out to all of the pregnant women that you know. I know that if I had heard that women had been losing their babies shortly after they received the vaccine, I would have followed my gut and not gotten it myself. Maybe then Wyatt would have had a chance at life.

I’m from a town of 2000 in SD, there are several women pregnant and we are all due within a few weeks of each other. Four of us got the H1N1 vaccine 2 weeks ago and one by one each of us started to have preterm contractions. We are all due in Nov and Dec so we are further along than most of the people that lost their babies. There is no way you can tell us that our preterm labor was not caused by the H1N1 vaccine. It may look like a “fluke” to some people when these women are scattered all over the country but we are talking about 4 of us in our small community. I got a flu shot in pregnancy, developed incredibly strange symptoms immediately (numb hands, feet and mouth, heart palpitations, sudden weakness in my legs, a bright red face), began bleeding and miscarried by 11 weeks. I had no idea there was mercury in most flu shots but once I found out after the fact, I was assured that I’d had the “mercury free” form. As it turned out, the shot wasn’t completely mercury free and, according to the EPA website, it still had 5,000 times the limit for mercury in drinking water– not to mention a list of other toxins (MSG, formaldehyde, etc.).



I’d had no idea the shots were so dirty. I guess I’d been under the impression they were something like sterile water and a dead virus, that’s it.

If you are a pregnant mother, please do not take the H1N1 swine flu vaccine. Instead, do everything that you can do to avoid public places and make sure to wash your hands more than you usually would. Take extra large doses of immunity building vitamins and research many of the great natural ways for fighting the flu that are out there on the Internet.



The truth is that if you do take the vaccine and then something happens, you will NOT be able to sue anyone (thanks to Congress). You will have to bear all the responsibility yourself. That doctor who kept pushing and pushing it on you will tell you that it could not have been the vaccine and that you probably would have miscarried anyway.



Do you honestly want to inject a vaccine that may contain mercury, formaldehyde, polysorbate 80 (associated with infertility), triton X100 (a strong detergent), phenoxyethanol (antifreeze) and a whole bunch of other toxic ingredients into your system when you know that your baby will absorb it too and has no defenses against most of these things?

The reality is that if you are pregnant, you need to hear what both sides have to say before ever subjecting your baby to the swine flu vaccine. My husband’s pregnant coworker (5 months along) called her doctor on the day they were giving the regular flu shots at work. He said she should get it. She did, and lost her baby the next week. This enrages and sickens me that the medical industry is pushing these shots on pregnant women and children, especially the new, little-tested, experimental H1N1 vaccine!

Also these vaccines as most of the newer vaccines may contain hGC (which is the pregnancy maintaining hormone) injection with this compound (which has been picked up my a chemical instrument called Gas Chromotography – so you can’t tell us it aint there) causes your body to reject future pregnancies.



I really hope that the lovely ladies whose comments are in the post, this hasn’t happened – judging by the information it may have, particulary in the lowered GC case.

Before scaring all pregnant women who’ve gotten the vaccine, perhaps you should have considered posting some statistical evidence that vaccinated women miscarry more frequently than non-vacinated women. I don’t believe that anyone has been able to come up with that data that shows this result. And if so, I’d love to hear about it.

My friend at work whose wife is pregnant and got the vaccine shot here in Canada about 2 week ago (the adjuvant vaccine shot). She is perfectly fine and has NOT miscarried.

One in five pregnancies is miscarried. Janet is right; without showing a comparison between miscarriage rates in vaccinated versus unvaccinated women, this means nothing. Some people get in car accidents after getting a flu shot. It doesn’t mean that the flu shot caused the car accident, just that car accidents happen!



As shocking as these stories are, we can also find as many “shocking” stories of pregnant women dying of H1N1. No one should make decisions based on anecdotal “evidence” like this.

Hey Janet, you asked if someone could provide: “statistical evidence that vaccinated women miscarry more frequently than non-vaccinated women.” As soon as the docs & the pharmaceutical companies properly and thoroughly test these vaccines for safety in pregnant woman…we will have that data! Why don’t you ask the medical community or a pharma company for that info???? And even thou they are using pregnant women as guinea pigs they are brushing any miscarriage off as a coincidence, not even evaluating the woman before and after each shot. How in the world is anyone gonna have that data you wish for until each doc thoroughly investigates properly????



And Janet, please tell us…if that baby does survive mom’s jab…who’s to say if that baby will be born healthy??? Where is that data…how do they know these shots are safe for growing fetuses unless they begin to test the baby when born and follow the child throughout life!



Before you try and calm women’s fears about flu shots…why don’t you find the answer to your own questions!!!??



How can anyone feel safe about something that has no safety studies??????????? You are being silly!



And I wonder why doctors aren’t telling their patients to take Vit D3 while pregnant???? That is much more safe then getting the flu shot. No one dies from vitamins! Or why aren’t they explaining to their patients about practicing good hand-washing?? Staying away from sick people??? I’ll tell you why…there’s no money in it for them, that’s why!



The flu has been around since the beginning of human existence. All of a sudden, over the past few years, there is this major “campaign” to get everyone a flu shot. Give me a break. The scare tactics are ridiculous and I can’t wait for the day people wake up!

I am 18.5 weeks pregnant, and received this vaccine a week and a half ago. At this point, I have had NO negative symptoms from this vaccine. I had achiness in my shoulders for about 24 hours, but it was minor, and something to be expected with most vaccines. With all things, there are risks, but for people like me who work in the public (you know, people who are idiots and go out when they are SICK), the shot was a better option than contracting h1n1 and having MORE complications from the sickness.



That said, I feel incredibly terrible for the mommies who have lost their babies. My heart hurts for them. I am sorry for all of their losses..

I am worried about the ones that don’t miscarry too in the sense that what happens to their child when it is born. Will the child be born with brain damage or physically damaged or injured in some way? After all the child gets everything the mother is getting and all flu shots have mercury in them. Mercury in any quantity is dangerous especially for developing children. Remember there has to be a reason why you can’t sue the vaccine manufacturers if you or your child is injured. Who would in their right mind allow chemicals injected into your blood stream, into your body under those conditions? You would be nuts!!!! Especially putting your own defenseless children under those circumstances. Health is precious – don’t allow yourselves to be guniea pigs for the pharmaceutical corporations. Their only motive is profit – bottom line.

I just don’t understand why would anybody, specialy pregnant, inject all the poisons in their bodies. W/all the info on net, it is no brainer decission.I got really ill as a baby after shots-I was 2. I almost died. I had to have eye surgery at age of 4,mom had to teach me to walk and sit all over again. I don’t care if someone feels that the shot will save them from something, just don’t use it when pregnant and on small children.

Well lucky for the ones that did not lose their babies… but that does not comfort the ones that do… One size fits all vaccines are not good for the general population and much less when they are still experimental!!!



And we still have to wait to see the baby after a year of birth… to see the damage of the ones that were not miscarried!!! Because there is a big chance that they will have neurological issues, some small and some big!!! good luck to this moms… I wish them all the best ans hope their kids are not one of the affected!!!

There has been no proper testing of these vaccines as they were rushed to market. The vaccine companies have been given total immunity.



In fact, Janet, thew inserts on the seasonal tell you that they (seasonal flu vaccine) have never been tested for causing infertility, cancer or gene mutation.



But the media and Big Pharma tells you to “trust them”, like a used car salesman would.



People that take any vaccines are without thoroughly investigating the ingredients and “post marketing” reports, are asking for trouble.

Annelee, my condolences for your baby I will pray for your baby…I will pray that baby’s mommy won’t continue to be victim of scare tactics. I understand you work with the public and understand you wanting to be safe. But you really need to do some more research and understand that by getting ANY vaccine during ANY time of pregnancy can be detrimental and if you think that little shot hasn’t hurt your developing fetus just because you didn’t miscarry you could be wrong and hopefully your child will not suffer any neurological issues. Fact: Vaccines give someone a false sense of security, making one think you will not get sick when in fact you can still get the illness.



Fact: A child’s immune system isn’t fully developed (100%) until 3 years old. I wonder what percentage a developing fetus would be?



Fact: Every time you get any vaccine you are weakening your immune system. When you do get sick you’ll get hit harder then you would have if you would have stayed away from the jab.



Fact: A flu shot can NOT be given to a baby 6months and under…so why can it be ok for a developing fetus?



Fact: In all the studies done in regards to the flu shot & preventing the flu there is NO evidence it is effective for all age groups except the elderly (and that was a VERY small %)



Fact: In many cases the wrong strain of flu has been chosen. For example, last year the CDC guessed the wrong strain. So everyone who got a flu shot…what was the point?



Fact: Mercury is 1000 x’s MORE toxic then Lead. How would you feel if lead were injected into you, even at small amounts?



Take the time to read the package inserts. Take the time to research the illness you are getting the vaccine for. Find out if it really is life threatening. For example…no one really dies from the flu, they die from complications. They die because maybe they have an underlying health condition like heart issues. They now have research out there that says taking antipyretics (Tylenol, Motrin) while having the flu can be detrimental to your health. What is the Vit D3 level of the person who passed from complications from the flu? And how shot was this person’s immune system from all the years of jabs? You are foolish to think a toxic-filled injection will protect you from illness. Taking care of your self, sleep, diet, vitamins, etc will help you get thru illnesses.



Also, people with Asthma need to get a clue too…Fact: if you have Asthma and get a flu shot you have a 3x’s higher chance of ending up in the hospital!!! Why? Because that jab and with all jabs you just weakened your immune system.

I have a question for those who plan to get a flu shot while pregnant…do you know if your fetus has a hypersensitivity to egg proteins? I didn’t realize my son was until he was about a year old. Do you know that a flu shot can be life-threatening if you have a systemic hypersensitivity to egg proteins?



And if you have decided to get the flu shot while pregnant…have you had a chance to review any of the package inserts? If not, I have posted some here for your review.

I find it interesting in ALL the inserts all of them state that the safety of this vaccine has not been established in pregnant patients. I also find it morally, and should be legally wrong, for anyone in the medical community to promote flu shots to their pregnant patients considering the safety of the product has not been established. Its disgusting. And I hope women begin to get better informed and realize you don’t need toxic-filled injections to keep you healthy!

I have spent many months researching the WHO CDC and vaccine makers info.

Folks need to wake up and educate themselves about serious things (vaccinations, food safety, pollution and politics) before they go believing everything they are told hook line and sinker. Educate yourself about BOTH SIDES of ANY ISSUE !!! You will pay the price for your gullibility. Talk to the old mid wives and old OBGYN’s and they will tell you all vaccines are contra indicated for pregnant mothers and very young children. While this is tragic everyone should view this as a wake up call to do your homework when it comes to something important. Ask questions, THINK !!!

It is not shocking you are putting poisons into your body what did you think would happen!!! A fetus is very fragile. BUT did you know if you didn’t get the vaccine and you did get H1N1 you could get so sick attached to machines for weeks then the doctors would give you a C-section when the baby is big enough and let you die!!!



It’s part of being human you have choices to make would you rather the fetus die or you? .. then the baby has no mommy.



I decided not to vaccinate my family although there are no pregnant people in my family.

You won’t see any public research saying anything about pregnancy and vaccine related “accidents” they don’t do them. Although they have done studies on the harmful affects of the flu with women who are pregnant and the dangers of mercury for preganant women. women who are preganant shouldn’t drink alcohol, take drugs. Formaldhyde is poisonous to the body, it is related to cancer. Wait didn’t I just list some of the key ingredients in the H1N1 vaccine. Stop being so ignorant. If it smells like dog poop and it looks like dog poop and there is a dog in the same yard as you guess what it is dog poop that you just stepped in. Don’t get the vaccine.

I went back and forth a lot myself. But I always get the flu shot myself and like Kayla said before, my little girl has beat so many odds, being born so early (31 weeks) and she is in the high risk category. I asked my doctor of 14 years, I really trust her, we discussed all my fears (talkes of mercury and of it not being properly tested) and she really put my mind at ease. We will all get our shots on Friday.

Yes I am absolutely get the H1N1 for my 14 month old son because this virus can kill children. The seasonal flu shot my doctor does not recommend for him b/c he says children can fight this like a normal cold. My husband and I got both shots for the safety of our child.

Here in Australia they don't give the h1n1 shot to children under 10. However both my partner and myself have had it with no side effects. They are offering it for free here.

My family all got the seasonal flu shot a month ago and the H1N1 shot last week. No complications from either shot and now I don't need to worry. The only reason I decided to get it was because my 3 year old seemed to bring home every illness last year from school, so I'm sure this year would be no different. The prospect for caring for two children under 4 with H1N1 was just too scary. I don't believe that this H1N1 shot is different than any other flu shot we've gotten in the past.

This is the HOT topic with all my friends right now! MY DH would like our wson to get it b/c he always get teh flu sho, where I do not. My DH also works in the school board so has to get the shot anyway. I have not havethe flu in years and I have NVER gotten the shot but am worried aobut weather I should give soemthing o new to my son who as Amanda pointed out will be getting his 15 month vacinne soon. I am pretty srue that there are two shot for this H1N1 needle in children and hey are21 days aprt. Thatwould put his 15 needle back a month so wha should we do? I figure I will ask my docotr his opionon.

i am not getting either shot for my daughter or for myself.. i have never had a flu shot... i think she is going to be injected with enough next month for her 15 month vaccines and thats enough at one time.. maybe if they hadnt just changed the vaccine again i would be more comfortable but it wasnt perfected a week before it came out (we just got it yesterday in Canada) so how can we be sure that it is at its best now??? Maybe when she is school aged i will consider it... but for now i just dont have a good feeling about it

We all GOT the H1N1 vaccine last night. I our situation, the benefits of getting the shot outweighd the risks because my son has a heart condition and while yes, they're allowing children under 2 to take Tamiflu under a pandemic, he still isn't allowed to take it. So, if he would have caught H1N1, I don't know what they would have done. The FDA is NOT going to just throw a vaccine out there that's unsafe...yes, it has mercury in it, but so does the seasonal flu shots and every other vaccine our children get. Does everyone know that the seasonal flu shot is "new" each year as well?...it's revamped yearly for a different strain of the flu...H1N1 would have been included in the same vaccine as the seasonal flu vaccine if it had been earlier! Plus, it's the exact same as the seasonal flu vaccine...but with the different flu strain. Google the TV show "The Doctors" they had a lot of helpful information on their show yesterday about it...debunked alot of myths! GBS is an extremely rare side effect of the H1N1 vaccine...but it's also a rare side effect of the seasonal flu vaccine. My son got both vaccines, he's beat way too many odds (2 open heart surgeries, severe congenital heart defect,one more surgery to go) to be taken from us by some stupid flu that there was a vaccine for and we refused to get! But....should I have had a heart healthy child...I might not have gotten the vaccine for him, who knows! It's a personal decision...and I wish you the best of luck! I will tell you our son had no side effects of the vaccine, nor did myself of my husband!

I have been stressing over this as well. I am planning on getting my son's flu shot when i take him for his 15mth shots. As for the H1N1, I'm not quite sure. My husband thinks we should, but I am scared to do it. With it being so new I'm not sure I want to get my son one. I'm worried that if I do get him the vaccine, him & others who have had it might get sick due to the vaccine. Do you have any information on risks of getting the vaccine?
