I'm not usually a fan of "crying it out" in any way, shape, or form...but with this situation it's sometimes the only answer! I have an 8 month old that also has severe sep anxiety, to the point that she cries if someone other then me has her and I walk by or into the room she's in. Even when she's with the people she stays with and sees every single day, like her grandmother, her reaction to me is crazy! I have found that giving in moderately to it has helped... like I am usually the one that rocks her and puts her to bed, but even if she's fussing a bit when she's playing with someone else, I don't "rescue" her. If you show them that its okay to be upset that they arent with you, it will just continue. Try the out of sight, out of mind tactic. Have your child's dad or family member play with them while you leave the room.... if they fuss, give them a few minutes and try showing a new or unusual toy.

My son does this...his seperation anxiety was so bad I had to keep my hand on his leg in the car so he knew i was still there...then we just turned him around. a little early, but he's over 20lbs. when he throws his tantrums i let him cry...he has a heart defect and turns blue if he screams too long, but there's nothing else we can do. he has to learn to not do this and we thought crying it out is the best way to learn! i dunno though...others say we're bad parents for letting him cry like that...but it's your call as to what you do and what you think is okay!
