My daughter will not say mommy!

My daughter just turned two in September and I'm dealing with the same thing!! She refuses to say mommy! I'm a SAHM and have been since the day she was born and it's just us. Her father is not around and hasn't had anyone around her who says "daddy" yet she insists on calling me daddy! It's so frustrating!! I know she can say mommy because she was just saying it last week and I know she knows who I am and she says "I love you" all the time....I just want her to call me mommy, though. It's like a game to her....I'm glad I'm not alone in this!

Yeah my son was the same. I figured it was because I was always with him and not away like his daddy or aunties etc when they are at work. He was naming all his cars, trucks and toys, his food and his pet before he ever said mum. I also realised it was because my partner didnt called me mommy like I called him daddy in front of our son to encourage him. It was always daddy daddy daddy. But now he is 18 months and for the last 3 weeks he knows I am mommy but he calls me money! He says mom but still points at me money haha

My son gave up saying mama when he heard some one call me by my name. So for about 5 months I was Ash. We are just now getting back to a few mama's and only when he really wants something.

My son wont call me mummy either, but he does call me by my first name Sarah, i try so hard to ignore him or i correct him but he just keeps saying sarah

My daughter has only very recently started calling me Mommy. She even was saying our cat's names and our neighbors names first. But a child development specialist who was speaking to my mom's group actually mentioned this phenomenon, and said that they usually already have their own name for you, in their own baby babble. It just takes some of them longer to give up their own way of referring to you and start calling you mom. And as the previous poster said, if there are no other kids in the house, your little one won't hear very many people calling you Mommy.

Unfortunately for myself, my daughter went through a phase where everything was "tractor" including me. So I was pretty relieved when she started saying Mommy.

guys... who is calling you mummy???... husband, friends...NO... so your (usually) first child does not get it...they have not heard it yet in context. So, get hubby to say... "go to mummy, read a book with mummy" all day long and even call you mummy for a while himself!. if you look at the language around you of others, even if daddy does this once or twice a day, the 300 other people in your life call you something else...even Ma'am!!
so dont sweat it...! My first child called me nothing (or so I thought) for about 3 years, even though he wwas a fluent talker...until some one said, "do you mind him calling you by your first name?" and I was HUH???... my name is Ries, and I thought for three years he was saying "wee's"... yes it was what every one ELSE was calling me... so I told my son to call me MUM, and he was so relieved, " oh good mum, coz that's what all the other kids call their mum"... hilarious!...

Same here! My 18 month old son will not say mommy! I am with him all the time, but he did call me dada the other day. Ahh!! I am so glad to hear others with the same issues.

The other day, he walked around and said 'mom, ma' but didnt look at me, so I was wondering if he even knows who I am! :) I'm sure one day it will all come out at once, hopefully!

My daughter was the same way. Daddy was her first word. I work from home so I am home with my daughter all the time. When my husband would come back from work, she would go running up to him and say "hi daddy". She would always go running up to my husband asking for Daddy for EVERYTHING. But now she says "mommy" ALL the time. Everything is "mommy" now...and I have to say, it's more tiring for me now that she wants me for everything. Give her time. She loves you and knows you are her mommy.

About what says Katie Chatam, is true that you get tired of hearing mommy every second. My two older kids are saying this in the same time and I do not know who to listen first. I wander haw it would be like when there will be three mommy in the same time!

I wish I had some good advice. My little angel said mommy first. I guess that is because I sat there day after day saying it. Now she calls everyone under the sun mommy. Good luck.

My daughter is the exact same! My mom says to enjoy it - eventually we'll get tired of hearing, "Mommy! Mommy! MOMMY!" :)

My daughter calls me by my name rather than mummy, yet she knows who i am if anyone asks! I quite like it when she calls me Dee Dee, that's when I know she wants a cuddle! Don't panic! As long as she know who you are, it doesn't matter what she calls you!

My 18 month old son calls everyone mum, evan cousins and my mother in law which annoys me alot. They get it right eventually some children take longer then others but i dont think we have anything really to worry about.

My daughter said daddy, papa and far which all mean daddy when she was 11months old. She called me by my name and absolutely refused to call me mama (mommy), when i told her to say mama she would just laugh at me and say no. Then she started calling me daddy. She only started calling me mama when she was 14 months old and only when she reaaally wanted something. So i guess it's normal for them not to want to say mommy. Hopefully she'll say mommy soon.

Hi! My boy calls me daddy too. If his brothers are telling him to say mama, he says tata in Romanian. But sometimes when he is upset or needs help, calls me mama. I am not sad, because I understand that mama is needed only when necessary!

ive got 2 daughters and the oldest one is nearly 4 and for the first year after she started talking she would not say mummy and if i pointed at a pictuer of me she would point to daddy so dont worry all babies r different now she wont stop saying mummy and my yougest is 19 months and she say mummy .all the time

Don;t feel bad...I'm in the same boat. My daughter is just about to turn 19 months and she doesn;t say Mommy...I was a stay at home Mom for just over a year so she was with me 24/7 and still her first word was Daddy...then Kitty, Doggy, Grand-dad, and now she's starting to say "Anthony" which is my brother-in-law's name...I repeat "Mommy" to her over and over, but still nothing...She says "Nunny" or "Nun"...but no "Mommy". Every other word that she says comes out clear...go figure...guess we just have to be patient...*sigh*

Join the club! No one calls me mommy so she does not either but she signs it, she has quite a few signs down, she can count to 10 and has most of her shapes and some of her ABCs too...and of course she says Daddy and signs it too......lol oh the horror!!!! lol

My son used you to say dada all the time and I used to get upset b/c he never said momma, but forget it now that he says momma. He is calling me all the time. If he wakes up in the middle of the night he stand in his crib calling momma. Now I am saying call daddy. lol

She will say momma now, but only when she is extremely frustrated. She yells Maaaama!! I know she will get there but she acts like it is a game!

The first time i heared my 18 month old say mam he was eatin some yogurt and he started sayin om yom mom and i laughed and now if he wants something he says tar and then whispers mam. He called me dad for ages but he doesn't see his dad so i dont really get why he called me dad.

I am a sahm and spend all day every day with my son and he never says mama either... he recently started saying it but its not very often.. like maybe once a week he will wlk up to me and say mama. I think that they just know that they always have mamas attention and it does not take much (like a lil whine or a lil cry or even a grunt) and mommy will come running to see what they need. Have you tried talking to her and saying "now mama is going to change your diaper!" etc? Like everything you do make sure you say "mommy is doing ____" and maybe she will pick it up =)

Oh, I know exactly how you feel. THe same think happened to me. She would call me Daddy, but spends the majority of her time with me. She finally said Momom, and it was the best thing! Don't worry, your little one will come around. Just keep telling her the word Mommy and point at yourself or a picture of you and she will get it sooner or later!

my little girl is the same! She has finally called me momma a couple of times in the past week or so (she is 18 months) - but she only does it when she really bad wants something. she also calls me daddy sometimes. They probably don't really have a need to call us by "name" if all of their needs are met and they know we'll pay attention anyway!

my son just started saying name too. its probably because he doesnt hear your name thaty m,uch being said. my husbands swears that he says it when i am not around. once he starts saying your name he might now stop :) be careful what you wish for :)

Not sure what it is. My 18 month daughter only calls me daddy. It was suggested that as she is with me all day,I talk about daddy and this is the word she has picked up on. She can say mumma as she calls her makka pakka teddy this. I wouldn't worry as she loves you, i not. They'll, get there!

My little girl has only just called me mummy today, for the very first time, and she is 18 months old. She's said Nana and Grandad and Daddy, but never mummy. When she said it this morning (after looking at me longingly for my breakfast) for the first time, I was chuffed to bits. I'm sure your little girl will say it when she's ready.

I'm a stay at home mom and spend every moment with our daughter, and thought for sure that her first word would be mom, but she was a year old before she said MOM, she said Daddy first and then Sage which is our dogs name..ha ha..i was like, you said the DOG's name before you'll say Mom..lol..at first i took it to heart, but got over it quickly when she said MAMA for the first time, and realized it's nothing personal..don't worry you're little girl will too :)
