Sleep Boycott?????

When we started having that problem with Kelsey about two weeks ago, I had no idea what to do.  I was on bedrest for the last few weeks of pregnancy and listend to my ipod constantly with the speakers plugged in. Whenever she was "restless in the womb" I would play the music and she'd calm right down.  My mom suggested playing my favorite pregnancy playlist for the baby now and it works like a charm. She's drowsy before the first song is over and totally out by the fifth! Try playing music or turning on the TV (ugh) so that your baby can hear familiar sounds from the womb. Those teddy bears that have the wooshing sound are supposed to work well for soothing babies and helping them sleep, too.

Front packs are good too, especially for supporting their weight without hurting your back.....we have a baby bjorn & it's working a treat. They certainly know how to keep us on our toes :-)

I hear ya.  That is exactly Wyatt, to a T.  He used to fall asleep himself for his naps- around 3 months old. I would lay him down drowsy after nursing and he would talk himself to sleep, or talk to his music star.  

Now.. heck no! We neeeeed the boob.  LOL And I understand.  I get it.  He is going thru some major changes in his brain right now, and it is normal for the extra wakings.  BUT I don't have to like it.  

And tonight, it took us about... hmm.. 1.5 hours to finally get him to sleep.  I had to lay him in his crib and let him cry so I could calm myself down.  Darn monkey. 

I would like to think/hope that this will change in a couple weeks. In fact, I looked back at journal entries I had when Bella was his age, and we were going thru the same thing.  But with Bella I had the ability to lay down with her and help her naps last longer.  Can't do that with Wyatt. 

Have you tried wearing him in a sling, and then once he is out, lay him down in the sling ( slip it off of you and lay him in the crib/bed/wherever he sleeps?? That used to work for us with Bella.  I haven't tried it with Wyatt, he is too heavy for me to wear in the sling we have.

Thanks!  I haven't used the sling for  a long time, not sure I could get him in to it, he is getting so big!  I might give it a shot though.  When he was new he would just pass out as soon as I got him in it!  I hope it passes soon!

I guess the only support I can offer is: you aren't the only one out there & although it's hard (trust me I know how hard it is with very little sleep!!) it will get better! And it's nice to know they are interested in the world rather than wanting to sleep all the time.

I love that website too!  I don't know what I would do with out it.  It seems to have answers to almost every question ;)  

We had a good night last night and a rough start to this night, so we will see!

Oh good.  I am not the only one.. LOL  I had somewhat of a problem like this with Bella, but she was always high maint. so I never thought much about it.  But Wy is such an easy going guy, its wierd when he has issues!  

I have heard that when they are learning new things they have sleep issues, and it makes sense.  It is how their brain develops.  Last night he slept from midnight till 5 ( woot!!) and then we changed him and back to sleep by 6am, and sleeping till 8:30am.  WonderfuL!!

My son has actually moved up his own bedtime this past week on his own- he's yawning and fussy and rubbing his eyes by 6pm (we usually put him down at 7:30). I've just been putting him to bed after 15 minutes or so of that and he goes right to sleep! On the other hand, he's started waking up between 12 and 2 and I think he's hungry (he used to last until about 5am). So I've been doing the extra feeding, but I'd really like to stop before it becomes a habit for him. It really does help to put him down drowsy- he's usually pretty good at falling asleep on his own.

That is interesting Melody. I didnt realize this happens around 4 months. I have started putting Grace in her bed awake but drowsy- yeah i know- old news. I used to avoid the crying by feeding her and inevitably she would fall alseep. Well all the sudden she just wants me to hold her and feed her all night!!! I am so tired!!! I have moved her bed time and have started to put her to sleep drowsy...it is nice to know I am not alone with the no sleeping thing!!!!!

Oh and naps are just horrible! She hates them!!

My pediatrician said to expect it at 4 mos and to not get into the habit of rewarding him by going in to check on him every time- sure enough at 4.5 mos JT stopped sleeping through the night and stopped going down easily as well. A lot of the sleep books say that now they're more aware of their surroundings, so when they wake up they know to cry for you. They also don't sleep as well while learning new skills as they work through it physically and mentally. All I know is I miss my sleep! I try not to do to him unless he's really wailing- he actually will often settle again on his own if he's just fussing, but once he starts really crying I just feed him to get it over with.

jp's sleep is all messed up at night because his gums are just sore i think. im just waiting for his first tooth to come in and i think he'll go back to fully sleeping through the night.

I guess the only support I can offer is: you aren't the only one out there & although it's hard (trust me I know how hard it is with very little sleep!!) it will get better! And it's nice to know they are interested in the world rather than wanting to sleep all the time.
