I am wanting to do the same thing and have a lot of people having success with snipping the tip off.

My daughter only ever had her pacifier at nighttime and then it would only be for 10 minutes and she would take it out and go to sleep. One night she threw one under the bed and the other between the bed and the wall. We told her that they were gone bye bye and not coming back. She still slept the same and didn't seem to care that the pacifier was gone.
Try getting him to say bye bye to the pacifier and have him throw it away.

We started with weaning down just to bedtimes and naptimes for a while when my daughter was about 12 months old. Then we took it away for bedtime for a few days, then naptime. It was a tough stretch of about a week, but it was over!
I've heard that for really persistent paci addicts, you can poke a hole or cut the tip off the paci, then they won't get the satisfaction of sucking on it. Good luck!

With my son I just took it away and it took only a couple days for him to be okay with it then I think he just forgot about it.. But for my daughter it was a little harder nothing worked tell I heard about cutting off the tip of the "pacy" and for some reason she didn't like it anymore I guess cause she couldn't really suck on it anymore lol Hope this helps
