My son is 8.5 months old and breastfed. I have been trying to introduce formula to him. He will not take it at all and I am not able to pump breastmilk anymore... He has taken a bottle in the past of pumped breastmilk, but the formula is not happening... Anyone have any tips? What did you do??

i also heard about the trick that lisa tried. but also have you tried letting someone else give him the bottle. sometimes when you are there they will not take it because they sense your milk. but like they say a baby will not starve.

Unless you are doing it because you are going back to work, I see no reason to wean your baby from the breast. Most specialist will tell you the longer you breast feed the better. Being a house wife I plan on breast feeding for as long as he takes it, or until he is 3 years old, which ever comes first. With all the news reports on the problems with formula, I will never give it to my son again.

My son would not take formula at 6 months and after suffering a horrible breast infection, he was just not getting enough! He would have a fit when I tried to give him a bottle of formula and just refuse. I started mixing a little formula into a bottle of breast milk and he would start to take it. I gradually and very quickly began adding more formula until it was all formula and we are now great!! Also, his pediatrician gave me the best advice of all, "I have never seen a baby starve themselves!"

Sheilla, I have the same dilemma. He shoves the bottle away when I hold it to his mouth, or he gnaws on it like a teething toy and throws it after 30 seconds. I love when people talk about how simple it is to wean. Not for me!!
I read on www.askdrsears.com that 9 months is sometimes not the best time to try to wean because the babies are more aware of separation, and might feel anxiety. My son has even bitten my shoulder lately, perhaps out of frustration. I am just trying to continue with the breastfeeding and perhaps start the 2am feeding as a bottle, since he's more sleepy. Who knows? Might just have to wait until 12 months to wean.
