I just read alot of stories about 5 month olds sleeping thru the night? What am I doing wrong? My son has his last bottle at 8pm and wakes up @ 1am and again around 4am. His weight is 21lbs and I know he's a chunker...could that be the reason. All I had asked for x-mas was for him to begin sleeping all night. Still waiting for my present.

It's totally normal for a 5-month-old to still be waking up throughout the night. You are not doing anything wrong! Try not to compare your baby to others.. every baby will do things a little different.

My son is still waking up at night for a night feeding :( He has a bottle between 8-9pm off to bed then wakes up again crying for another bottle around 2-3am and then fully awake at 8am.... I wouldn't mind him just waking up in the middle of the night but he cries for a feeding ! :(

im going through exactly the same thing as you. from advice i was given i have started to wake my son up at about 11pm (when i go to bed) and feed him again then. he will then be full and sleep through till about 6am giving me a nice 6-7 hour sleep. also i found that now hes nearly 6 months i can go throughthe night without changing his nappy, meaning he doesnt really wake up and goes back to sleep really quickly on those times he does want an extra feed through the night.

hope this helps x

I was just spoke with my son's ped. yesterday. She said getting up once at 5 months is normal - but not twice (which my son started doing when he caught a cold - but now that the cold is gone, he can't break the habit!) She suggested letting him cry it out through the first one (because we know he's not really hungry!) It was hard to hear, but she said for a 5 month old to let him cry, but go in about every 10 - 15 minutes and pat his back or tell him he's okay - just don't pick him up! She said if he's cried an hour, than pick him up and comfort him. We'll see how this goes!! Last night, our son slept from 8:30 - 5, had a bottle and went back to bed...I'd love to replicate that!!

My son wakes up all the time still. My son is 19lb 4 oz , 27.5 in so I know about big babies!! :) He has had a 2 colds since Christmas and wakes up 5-9 times a night b/c he can't breathe. Before that he was waking 2-3 times a night...so I know exactly how you feel! They all get there...My daughter is 2 1/2 so I've been here before...Hang in there!!

Our 5 month old also is a big boy and wakes us up 3 times a night I started giving him baby rice in morning and carrot purée for lunch, as well as hungry baby milk he slept through the night twice since but now is waking up again so I might give him some baby porridge at night for his tea. Apart from that he is a healthy alert child. Also bought a musical mobile for his cot that helps putting him to bed.

My son did the same thing.. so we actually put rice or wheat ceral in his bottels for bed time. i put him down at 9 he wakes up at 7 for a changing and another bottel and sleep again till 9-10.. it may help to feed him food during the day too.. We feed him the baby food (1's) or i will make the cereal and mix the food with it. i feed him food more than give him a bottel during the day and at night i use the bedtime formula and mix the cereal with it and it keeps him fuller longer..

my daughter is waking at night too, a perfect gem at sleeping through the day without any fuss but at night she gets really restless and keeps waking up through the night, she has one bottle through the nite but keeps waking through the night!! maybe its too hot or shes teething! Any other bubs doing this???

Yes!!! My little girl is 5 months old and does the exact same thing. It's frustrating to say the least. I know she is teething but I wouldn't think she would wake up so much. She starts to whimper/cry. If I go to her right away and pat her, sometimes she will go back to sleep and other times not and we end up giving her a bottle. She used to sleep through the night at aruond 3 months and now not any more.

There's a great article on Parents.com on how to schedule sleep. The key is to get them in bed earlier (opposite of what we'd think). I've been reading the article to get some ideas myself, as my 5 mo old still likes 1 middle of the night feeding too. I'm going to follow this article to see if it works.

my son is five months too and about the same weight.
my question to you... do you sleep thru the night? or do you get thirsty and get a drink or get up to pee? or just wake up sometimes?
when people ask if my son sleeps through the night my answer is 'no, and neither do i. his timing may not coincide with mine and that is why it is inconvenient".
my son nurses around 8:30, sleeps at 9, and get up right around when yours does to eat. are you worried about him sleeping because other people say he should be sleeping through the night?
also nursing or formula may make a difference for sleep length. i nurse and co-sleep so he doesnt cry to be fed - he just wiggles when he is hungry so i dont have to try to soothe a crying baby. he nurses and falls right back to sleep - that may be part of why i am unfazed by him getting up. :)

Honey, you are not alone. My daughter was sleeping through the night at a month of age. My son started around 2 months and then got sick around 3 months and since then he wakes up for a bottle around 3 or 4 am. He is eating 8 oz bottles. I have him now eating a veggie and fruit (he eats both of them and eats the whole jar) 2 times a day. He is sleeping better not. Last night he slept through the night. Thank you God! But I am not counting on it sticking. I have been feeding him baby food at about 6pm and them he gets his last bottle at 9 and that has seem to make him sleep a little longer! Hope this helps. My is a big boy just like yours. We love our chunker. He sits up by himself and is trying to crawl so his weights not holding him back..lol......My daughter was the same and was a very chunky baby!

[deleted account]

You are not alone. Except my baby girl has been getting me up every two hours at night. This is unormal for her because she has always slept really well. I am starting her on Oatmeal for breakfast and dinner and veggie at lunch. If you haven't started Oatmeal yet then I would just feed him at night right before bed time. He should start sleeping better at night. I am on my second girl and they have both done this. Its just a growing stage. He will get past it soon enough and start sleeping soon. That is what I am hoping for.

i feel you. my son is 2 weeks past 5th month and still wakes up every 3hours for a bottle. i came across one article the other day. last night, i fed him oatmeal with banana then follow up 3oz of milk. he was on bed at 9:30pm, slept on his own for the first time, he woke up but not crying by 1am, i just gave him his pacifier and he just went back to sleep. on the article i read they wont get starve through the night as long as you know you have fed him enough. he woke up again at 5:30am no crying again but i feel like he should be hungry already i just fed him 5oz then went back to sleep again. he used to drink 6oz every 3hours. im going to try this again see if he will get used to this atleast he gets 8hrs straight sleep without feeding. will keep u posted.

My son is 5 1/2 months old and was sleeping through the night at 1 month old but when he started teething he stared to wake and want to feed or just be held and use my breast as a pacifier (he is exclusively breastfed). He will some nights get up two time and some nights get up only once. I just figure that it is his tooth pain making him wake up and that because he is used to eating every time he wakes up he feels he has to try to eat even if he is not really hungry. Sometimes though before I get to him he will fall asleep.

I think it varies baby to baby. My son is 5 months old and sleeps through the night, but I have two co-workers whos babies are a couple months older than my son and they wake up every 2 hours during the night.
I bottle feed and they breast feed, that might also have something to do with it.
On another note, your baby is a chunker, 21 lbs at 5 months! wow that is awesome. My son was really sick for about a month, he is barely reaching 16 lbs.

My daughter is 5 mon and 18lbs, and she been a great sleeper. As a newborn she was sleeping 5-6 hours a night. By 2 mon she was sleeping 7-8 hours a night. Around 2.5 months she started waking up at 1am for a feeding. During that time she did seem hungrier than usual, so I figured she must be going through a growth spurt and the night feeding would pass. Two weeks later she was still waking up and I was so tired. So, I did some research and found an article that suggested that a babys internal clock could get stuck if baby is waking at night for a feeding. To correct it; the article suggested that I use a passy to soothe her back to sleep and not feed her. I did this for two nights in a row and by the third night she was back to her old schedule, and she does not use a passy because this is the only situation in which she is offerd a passy. She also woke up new years around 1 am because of all the camotion and I did the same thing. I went in and offered her a passy and she went back to sleep. The article said you could also pat your baby or rock your baby back to sleep, but the idea was not to offer a feeding. It might work best if you start tring to eliminate the 1am feeding first. I hope this helps :-)

have you tried to just put his dummy back in at 1am and patting him slightly on the bottom....dont think his weight has any thing to do with it i really think this is just a stage they go threw if you read the other replies many babies the same age are doing the same routine.....hopefully with time he wil just grant you your christmas wish and sleep threw for you...fingers crossed...

I am starting Operation Sleep All Night this weekend. I hate to, but I am trying the "cry it out" method. He is getting up more now than he was two months ago! He immediately stops crying when he is picked up, so I know he is not hurting. I did give him one of those soft little bitty blanket/bear head things, which he likes, but makes me paranoid that he is going to smother himself (highly unlikely). Has anyone tried a method they found in a book or the internet? My kid eats like a horse and is getting cereal and solids.

My son was 18lbs at his 4 month check up. I have been told that once he starts solids he will sleep longer...have you tried starting solids yet?

Wow, do I know how tought this is. My nephew was born August 2008 and than my daughter August 2009. Every time I see my sister in law she tells me what my daughter should be doing by now. And how my nephew did this and that!

Well forget them! Your baby will do things on their own! My baby girl is chunky. And sometimes she sleeps through the night, sometimes she doesnt. No matter when I feed her. And she is 20lbs. So its not weight or when you feed them. Its just how they do things.
Now I have noticed a warm thick cereal bottle helps my girl go to bed and stay to bed. But she only gets a warm bottle at night. So its her trigger to know its time to go to bed. And the cereal helps her stay asleep.
Hope you get your present soon

Gabi is 5 months on the 20th and still wakes up twice so I feel your pain. Some of the other mums in Mothers Group have had their babies sleeping through since 6 weeks. It the luck of the draw. As my nurse said, they are all different so don't worry yourself about it.

My son wasn't born in August but I was reading everyone's posts and most of you seem to have the same problem. My son was actually born in February, I started my son on the beginner baby cereals at 1 month and he has no woken up at night ever since. Once he had a fever and woke up for 5 minutes. I know the pedaetrician associate doesn't recommend feeding a baby solids until 6 months, but guess what, back in the older days, many parents didn't have money for formula and gave regular early on, many of older parents fed their children solids early on as well and babies were sick with all kinds of things like they are more likely today. I can proudly say my sister, myself my fiance and my son were all fed solids much earlier then recommended and none of us have any allergies and don't get sick very often. Listen to your babies rather then what a book tells you.

My little man has his last feed at 6-6:30 and is in bed by 7. Then I give him a dreamfeed at 10pm and he sleeps through till 6-7. You could try a a dreamfeed and see if it helps.

you are so not alone! My guy will be 5 months next Wednesday and weighs over 19lbs and he still wakes up for a feeding. He goes down around 6-6:45 and gets up anywhere between 11:30 and 1:00 for a feeding. He will eat from 6-8 oz and then goes off to sleep till about 7. I think it's because he is a big dude that he wakes up still. I just started him on rice cereal and it's slow going but I am hoping that once he starts baby food he will become more full during the day.

Hi I have a 4 1/2 month old boy and he wakes between 2-4 am for a feed. I started giving him 8oz yesterday (he also has baby rice once a day) he woke up at 4am this morning, so I went downstairs to make up a bottle and when I went back up he had fallen asleep again so he didn't drink that milk, he went round to 7am. I don't know if it was because he is now having 8oz or just a one off, I will see.

Some babies like to eat more then others. Not sure if there is anything that can help. I use the lavendre bath products and this may help him sleep for a longer period of time, but I think your boy is just a hungery little baby.

My son just turned 5 months, what I have learned (he's my 5th kid) is if u feed them oatmeal as their last meal (or close to bed) they normally will sleep all night. Oatmeal fills them up and keeps them full for a much longer time than milk. Give it a try & let us know if it works for u. FYI my son was 20lbs at his 4 month check up (hes a big one) but it works for him:).

I feel for you! My son is the same way, he is 4 1/2 months old and he to has his last feeding at 8 then wakes up in between 1-3 then again about 3 hrs later. I'm going to start trying this new thing with him (Cause i know he's not starving) to try to get him back to sleep without feeding him. Start by maybe cutting down 1 feeding a night and try that for a week or two then try and cut out the last feeding. I'm hoping and praying that it will work!!! I don't know if this helped you but just so you know.. you're not alone!!

Good luck
