HI there. I am an infant development specialist and I can tell you that all babies develop at their own pace. It is very important that babies crawl before they walk. I am really surprised that the woman with preemies pediatrician told her it shouldn't be a milestone. Crawling strengthens the corpus collosum which connects the right and left hemispheres of the brain. There is a strong link to skipping crawling and learning disabilities later in life. The best thing you can do for his physical development is to give him lots of floor time. Being in a walker, bouncer or swing limits movement. My almost 9 month old daughter is not crawling either but she is rolling and I see her beginning to push up on her knees and hands sometimes. The steps in between the milestones are just as important as the milestone itself. One of the reasons more children are skipping crawling is the increase in things we put them in that limit their mobility ie swing, bummo, bouncer, walker, exersaucer etc. In addition if he throws a toy out of reach don't get it for him right away this will give him some motivation. You can't really teach a baby to crawl he will find his own way. BTW army crawling counts for brain development because it is cross lateral. (right arm-left leg/ left arm-right leg)

My baby is 12 months and not crawling yet. She also does not like to bear weight on her feet. I took her to the Child Health Nurse who recommended I see a pedriatic physiotherapist. Although my other daughter never crawled till 1 year, they believe early intervention is best. Even if they find my baby to be ok they can give me some exercises. Many people will say "don't worry" but I say if you are concerned about this or anything, be proactive and find out what you can do to help. Each child is different and so is each parent. Good Luck ;)

I have already posted a comment to this thread but I was just going to update everyone. My son will be 9 months in less than a week and he now pulls up on everything all by himself. And we recently got him to get on all fours and actually stay there and rock...So give it time..It will happen sooner than you think!!

My son is 8.5 months old and he still isn't crawling either. I have heard that boys learn a little slower but as far as that being a fact I am not sure. My son doesn't crawl, or pull up on things. He will pull up if you help him a little bit...I am sure that our sons will be fine, because as I am sure you have heard, but they all learn at their own pace...I think the only time you should worry is if your son is 12 months old and still just rolling around, lol!!! We will be fine, keep your head up Rebecca!!

my son will be 9 months on the 1st of may, and he JUST did his first 'modified' crawl today..
your son will crawl, or walk or whatever his next milestone is when he's ready...
remember.. whether at 8 months or 12 months.. we all do things at our own pace.. and i dont know any kid who doesnt know how to crawl or walk ;)

My 8 month old isn't crawling yet either. I think every kid is different though because my older son started crawling about 7 and half months old. But I'm not in a big hurry for him to start crawling because then I'll have two kids to run around after lol

My son has not started to crawl yet either. He is getting up on all four a lot now though. My oldest son was pulling himself up and walking along furniture at 7 1/2 months. Evry kid is different and in due time they will take the milestone!!

My 8 month old boy is already crawling and standing up on anything he can hold on to ! He crawls from room to room and walks from one couch to the other ( while holding on) as long as there's something to hold he'll keep on going ! ~ We have wood flooring mostly in out house but we decided to put carpet in the living room for the baby.. and the same day it was installed he started doing all those things! lol so cute! JUST GIVE UR BABY SOME TIME...CRAWLING IS NOT MUST.. HE'LL GET THERE BEFORE U KNOW IT!

I have 8 1/2 month old twin boys. One just started crawling this week and the other is just scooting and isn't very interested in crawling. Most kids skip crawling altogether and just get up and walk one day. Have a feeling that is what my youngest is gonna do

I never crawled. I sat till i was 10 months and then scooted on my bum till i walked. My son (turned 8 months today) is a super strong, loud, farting, burping, manly man who wouldn't cuddle with me to save his life. So he was so curious he found out a way to get around. He more walks with his toes and hands than crawls.
Not crawling is totally normal. My mom had 8 of us and only one of us crawled. It's not important and is probably just a blessing.

My son turns 8 months in 3 days & he's been crawling on his hands & standing up on anything he can & moving from foot stools to the couch for over a month now, it's crazy, I say enjoy the time you have whilst he can't move around too much! My son follows me everyehere & gets into everything he possibly can, definately keeps you on the go! He got his first tooth just beofe he was 6 months too, all babies are different, they'll do it when their ready!

my son is 8 months old as well and doesn't crawl. I'm sure he's fine, he'll just learn his large motorskills at his own pace! My son gets up on all fours and rocks back and forth. He'll try to get a toy in front of him but just moves backwards and gets frustrated. He has just started to move one arm forward as of two days ago. He also bum shuffles a bit too. You can always encourage him by giving him lots of tummy time and crawling around in front of him. He'll think it's great! have fun.

My daughter is 8 months old too and doesnt crawl I asked her pediatrician if this was normal and her response to me was, " does she like tummy time?" which she doesnt so she said, "she will never crawl she will skip that step and go straight to standing and then walking." Hope that helps relieve some of the worry.

Oh and as far as feeding (sorry I wasn't paying 100% attention) he eats the 2nd foods in the little plastic containers. He likes the applesauce, sweet potatoes, squash, bananas and pears best. I still feed him his baby cereal 2 times a day which he loves too. I give him his baba about 5 times a day and he usually drinks 4 to 5 oz. I think I have a little piggy on my hands! He likes the little gerber bites that melt in their mouth. He likes the cheesies and sweet potato ones the best. Also, the yogurt ones. I try everything at least once so this way if he likes it he has a variety of things to eat.
Hope this helps!

My son Kooper has just turned 8 months and he is army crawling and getting around really quickly, so he's happy with that.. he has been getting up on his hands and knee's for months and is trying to pull himself up on things... Don't worry, they are all so very different and do it when they are ready! My first born son didn't crawl completly untill he was 10 months and didn't walk untill 16 months, and my secound bub army crawled at 6 months- hands and knee's at 8 months, then walked at 10 months... Im thinking that my little man will skip crawling too!

My son is just over 8 months and pushes himself backwards very efficiently but hasn't worked out how to crawl forwards yet. He's done the same thing of pulling the rug closer to bring a toy in front of him within his reach, and I think this is really clever! Far from 'just' pulling the blanket closer, this is really good problem-solving. I'm not at all worried about physical development as he gets around well enough in his own way, but I am really pleased to see the mental development coming along.

When my son was 8 months he couldn't crawl at all. His head was soo big he had problems with the balance, at 9 months he crawled for 2 weeks and then walked so don't be worried. My daughter has been crawling for a while and she is trying to stand on her own and she cruises around the furniture slowly.. I have met a few more babies that are 8 months and are still having problems sitting on their own. So everyone is different. Be thankful he isn't crawling... My son as into everything and it was exhausting... I am trying to discourage my 8 month old from doing things... and today I found her standing at the toilet... UGH!

My twin sons turned 8 months on the 17th, neither one is crawling yet. They are close I think, they pull themselves up and they kind of scoot around (usually they go backwards), but no crawling. I've tried getting down on the floor and showing them how to crawl, but so far they just think it's funny when I do that. I'm not concerned, I know they'll each do it when they're good and ready.

My son started to back crawl at 6 months, and started crawling on all fours at 7 months...soon he'll be walking as he is starting to cruise around and pull himself up to standing. Believe me, let him take his time. Now I have to be super vigilant and watch him because he's not interested in his toys anymore, now he wants to pull cords and eat DVDs and such. I think he became mobile early because he is pretty lean and doesnt have a lot of weight to carry around.

That's so funny you said he pulls the blanket to him to get his toys..My son does the same thing! He just turned 8 months and started doing that around 7 months and he is now scooting forward. My doctor told me that babies are crawling later or not at all now because they are recommending babies sleep on their backs now, so they're not getting as much time on their tummies.

My son is 8 1/2 months old, he doesnt crawl either. He hates tummy time, everytime I try put him on his stomach he roles over to his back. he loves to stand with my help though Its a relief to see my son isnt the only one lol... it will happen when he is good and ready :)

Is he moving and rolling and stuff? I wouldn't worry about it. My 8 month old boy isn't crawling yet but he sure get's around and will be crawling very soon! All kids are different and some even walk before they crawl... talk to your doctor to make sure all other developmental signs are present and you'll be good to go. ENJOY these last few moments of not chasing a kid around the house =)

this is totally normal. Don't worry about it. If you want to encourage crawling, get down on the floor with him and show him how to crawl. When you need to get something and you're on the floor crawl over to it. This will help him understand how to get to places...he gets to see it too. More floor time is also a good way to get him moving. But really...don't worry about it. The sooner he starts crawling the sooner you have to chase him.

My son is 8 1/2 months and he's not crawling either. He doesn't seem to be interested in it at all. I'm not worried about it because I've read that crawling isn't really a milestone they have to accomplish and he's been right on the money with everything else so far. I'm in no hurry for him to be mobile anyway!

my son turned 8 mos exactly today - and he just started to move a couple steps then lunges out for whateve he wants or army crawls, rolls whatever it takes to get to where he wants to go. My daugther never really crawled much either. She first started about 9 maybe almost 10 mos. I'm not alarmed by it, he's just a content baby that apparently has no where to go. Tummy time can help strengthen the upper body and neck muscles and my son absolutely loved tummy time and he still really could care less if he crawls. I even bait him with toys and he'll roll towards it if he feels like it
