Bumbo or Highchair?

My husband and I can't agree over whether we should get our daughter a Bumbo or a Highchair. We haven't started her on any food yet, but she's very close to sitting up on her own and I'd like to get her a Bumbo to help her with her balance and also so she's not always laying on the floor as she likes to look around. My husband thinks buying a Bumbo would be a waste of money as she'll grow out of it faster than a high chair. He thinks we may as well just put the money towards the high chair in the first place since we'll probably end up buying one when she gets bigger anyway. Does anyone have an advice on this?

A friend of mine is a physical therapist and STRONGLY recommends AGAINST the bumbo. They allow a baby to sit up w/o having to actually use their abdominal muscles. This makes it way more difficult for them in the long run to sit up on their own, and they have lazy tummy muscles. Go for the high chair. You can use them for a much longer period of time, have multiple adjustments for height, and the backs can lay back a little more for the young ones.

Glad you went for the booster! Bumbo's are only for the ground, and are VERY dangerous if put on a raised surface. We have a highchair and don't put the tray on, as it fits right at the table so Tanner is with the table with the family!

i recommend a highchair. a bumbo chair can only be used on the ground and its alot easier to feed at chair height. if you worried about cost get the booster seats with a tray that hook on a regular chair. you'll get about 3-4 years of use out of it plus it travels to grandmas house.

Thanks Ladies! We decided to compromise and went for a booster seat like Erin suggested...it's great!

my daughter at 4 months can almost wiggle out of her bumbo. so i would recommend getting the highchair. although the bumbo is great for traveling!

Caleb loves his bumbo. He can eat, look around and play in it esp. w/the tray on it. It's easy to clean and store, plus travel with. We bring it to our parent's houses all the time. A high chair is just another piece of furniture to clean, in my opinion. My nephew is 3 years old and still fits in his bumbo...

bumbo chairs are useful for potty training, and feeding!! it fits children up to 4 years of age, so the chances of her growing out of it soon are unlikely!! =)

I know a lot of people who found the bumbo very helpful for a lot of reasons...a highchair is only good for feeding really. BUT my baby hates the bumbo...he's almost 5 months, keep hoping this will change.

We have both, we got the bumbo and it took my son some time to get used to it but he loves to sit in it now, he can look around and he's learning to hold his torso area better now. We got a highchair for christmas and we put him in that when he gets to eat cereal, but I don't think that he likes it as much as the bumbo

If you want to save money, buy only a highchair. Will last till she is 3. Bumbo will only last a few months. I have both and will start my daughter in the bumbo, but pretty soon she will be using only the highchair.

I think your husband is probably right. You'll use a highchair longer. But with that said, I'm still a huge advocate of bumbo seats. They are the best! I absolutely love mine. I have both a bumbo and highchair, though. (The highchair was a gift from work.)

I have used the bumbo for both of my children. Our son grew out of his really fast because he was so chunky. I use it for our daughter oftern during the day. She is able to get off of her back, play, look around and interact with everyone when she is in it. Our son is now 2 and he still likes to play in the bumbo now. He fits in it better now. So it works both ways he still uses it just as a toy a place to sit and play when his sister is not using it. It has been worth our money. Hope this helps

i would recommend a bumbo!

my 5mo daughter loves hers! for mealtime i put it in a highchair and feed her there, but for other times during the day she likes to just be able to sit in it and look around!

if you don't want to pay full price, try looking on craigslist.com or ebay.com (thats what i did!)

good luck!

bumbos are great if shop around you can get them cheap enough but make sure it includes a play tray mine was £30 from mother care

I like having a highchair because it gives him better support when he leans back. I have a bumbo too, and I plan on using it for if/when we travel. It does look like my son will grow out of the bumbo fairly soon actually, so that is a good point your husband has!
