I started my first son on cereal at 2.5 months, he was always reaching for our food, sitting up, rolling both ways and was very big for his age (over 90th percentile for both height and weight) so he was ready for cereal, and he is 2 and perfectly healthy. I have alot of experience with babies and I can tell you that it all depends on the baby. My son now is also a big baby but shows no interest at all in food so I have not started him on cereal and he will be 4 months next week. The one thing I can say is that it's better for them to be fed the cereal from a spoon than to add it to the bottle. It helps them develop the skills to eat and drinking cereal from the bottle isn't beneficial, if they are ready for cereal than they are ready to eat it from a spoon, just make sure it's really watery so they don't choke. You know your baby better than anyone else and guidelines are just guidelines go by what your baby seems to be ready for.

We started giving our son baby rice at 2 weeks old. We then changed his formula to the extra hungry one but it still wasn't enough for him. He is now 14 weeks old and has a puree fruit pot for breakfast and a jar of baby food for his dinner. He is still taking his milk but he can now go longer between feeds and sleeps well at night. If he doesn't have his solids for one day, he makes sure we pay for it the next, lol. At the end of the day both my partner and myself were on solids from 2 weeks old, and we are perfectly healthy. You have to do what you feel is best. You're his mum and know how hungry the little man is. If you start him on very runny baby rice and take it slowly from there, then I am sure everything will be ok.

I am not 100% sure but I think that the newest studies show that waiting till six months old has no benefits so are going back to the old way of saying that it is when the individual baby is ready, usually around 4 to 6 months but with everything, can be earlier or later.

Probably not baby food but rice cereal, I know for sure you can start at 4 months but I am sure it wont hurt to start a lil early, just be careful because too much can cause them to be constipated if they are not use to digesting the food

My son is 14 weeks on Sunday and I started him on baby rice at 9 weeks old! He's a big lad and is now 15lb 3oz! He was waking every 3-4 hours in the night for a feed each 6oz. I started giving it him at night and it didn't really make a difference, so I tried rusk at night and that helped for a little while! Now he has banana porridge for breakfast, half a small pot of purée food for dinner and half a rusk at bed time and he's sleeping between 10-12 hours a night! He's pooping 2-3 times a day and seems to be digesting it fine! He also LOVES it!! You will no when they are ready.

My baby boy is 3 months 1 week and 7.5kg, he doesn't get full with his milk. He feeds all the time and after reading your experiences I am now positive in moving forward to trying out rice cereal. Thanks moms :)

my doctor told me its best to wait till there 6 months to feed them solids because their digestive system isnt fully developed yet and it could cause problems later on.

I WOULD RECOMMEND ASKING YOUR PEDIATRITION AND DONT DO NOTHING UNLESS THEY SAY ITS OKAY FOR YOUR BABY OR U MAY RUIN THEIR DIGESTIVE SYSTEM.

starting your baby on foods at three months is bad choice they cant digest it properly the recommended time to start is 6 months if u start now your baby could get ill or get allergies or excsma when older talk to you health visitor about it x

I started my babes on rice cereal...only 1/4 teaspoon and very watered down with breastmilk...at 10 weeks old and he loved it. He is a big boy (10lbs 12.6 ounces at birth) and breastmilk alone wasn't enough to keep him full. He seems quite satisfied and is sleeping through the night.

every baby is different, when you think he is ready then give it a go, my husband and i started our son at 10 weeks because he began teething and we felt it was time.

Its recommended that you dont start babies on food until they turn 6 mnths (From what i was told). My son has stopped being satisfied with just formula too, but once i started adding rice to it, he is back to being satisfied after each feeding. Since every baby is different, talk with your baby's pediatrician first.

I started my son on single grain cereal at 2 1/2 mo at bedtime. I water it down with formula, but that helped us. You just have to watch out for constipation.

My son just turned 15 weeks old and at his 8 week well-baby exam the pediatrician told me I could start giving him rice cereal once or twice per day. he also said I could introduce peaches, pears, apricots, applesauce (basically all of the Gerber fruit 1st foods). he told me the same thing with my first son (who will be 4 in january) and my son has absolutely no allergies whatsoever. My 15 week old son absolutely loves his fruit and we will be introducing beans, squash, etc. to him after we get the approval at 4 months from his doctor. I think it is different with each baby, as not all babies are the same. My son was 13 pounds at 8 weeks and always hungry...breastmilk was never satisfying him and he was always wanting to eat. He has since gotten onto a better eating routine, although he does eat often. He was holding his head up really well, in fact, i feed him in a high chair that reclines and he loves it. after about 2-3 weeks of practice, he totally grasps the concept of opening his mouth with a spoon and swallowing, etc. you will read in the books (what to expect during the first year) that you shouldn't introduce solids so soon, but we totally trust our pediatrician and it worked out well for our almost 4 year old son and has been so far with my new little one as well. good luck to you.

Hiya
Ive just posted about the same thing! My little girl is 13 weeks today and weighs 12lb, ive been feeding her solids since 8weeks as she was so hungry and also feeding every 2 hours. However she was only snacking and never takin a full bottle and even though i upped her amount of milk she was always sick. I started off on giving it to her at night times and have now upped it 2 twice a day...just making sure it is gluten free. she is now free of colic and settled and sleeping through the night! xx

I have no idea what rusk is... However, i agree if you think your child is ready then go right ahead. just be careful and make sure he doesn't choke. I feed my son fruit everyday for lunch. I was told that starting them on fruits first is best because theres a less chance of them being allergic.

What is rusk? I saw a mom on another board started her 3 month old on Enfamil A.R. and then on Enfamil Restfull, both formulas have rice starch in them. She did this for the same reason, her baby never seem satisfied but her ped didnt want her LO on rice cereal yet. It worked out well for her.

hiya... my son is 2 months and 3 weeks and is on solids already i started him on it when he was 2 months old. my gp said that the "recommended age" is a guide my son was licking his lips and crying when i eat he was ready for food i started with a tiny amount of fruit and slowly gave him more he is so much happier now and loves the food. ask your gp for advice. BTW Rusks are like baby biscuits with liquids goes soft and turns into puree smooth cereal like but be careful as it is made of wheat flour and contains gluten. good luck and enjoy the mess of solid food :)

My son will be 12 weeks tomorrow and I have been adding a tsp of rice cereal right in the bottle once in the morning and at bubba time before night he loves it and also sleeps for 9 hours through the night.. I also agree and would not introduce pureed food either as their stomachs cannot handle it just yet! good luck!....Kindy

yes you can, there is no rules saying you cant! Use your own instincts! My boy is 12 weeks and I started him on purity rice cereal (only in the morning) about a teaspoon full! Gradually increase the amount if you see it is not enough! but dont overdo it as his stomach needs to get use to it! Then after a while you can give him morning and night! My baby loves it and ever since I gave him the ceareal he has been sleeping through (lucky me) Good luck and have fun!!!!!!

Ask your doctor before you start him on anything other than rice cereal. They say a babies digestive system is not developed enough before 4 months to handle solids like pureed foods. There's also a higher risk of developing an allergy. You are the only one who can make this decision, but ask your doctor or do your research before you feed him anything other than the cereal.

as donna said start him on a bit of rusk made really sloppy, my boy is 13 weks and has quarter of a rusk made with an ounce of extra hungry baby milk and drains both breasts and has now started having bottle top ups as long as you just start with only a few baby spoonfuls and build up you won't run the risk of over feeding him and making him sick ( done that the first time i gave him rusk and it was not nice!!) also i've found that he likes fruity baby cereal so he has that now and then and anouther tip is stay with the origianl rusks unless you're doctor tells you not to as the glutne free ones are harder and you have to use more fluid to make them sloppy!! hope you and your boy have fun with new foods!!

Hi Gemma, each baby is an individual and if you think your baby is ready, i say do it! My baby boy is now 14 weeks old and has been having some rusks since he was 10 weeks old and he loves it! He is much more settled and satisfied. So yes i recommend it. I asked a doctor and the only danger of having it is the choking not the food. So we just make the rusks very milky (watery) so it just runs down his throat. He has it after his bath just before bed and he sleeps right through until the morning as he is nice and full. Hope this helps. Good luck.
