I chose to introduce whole egg as described above because I'm following Baby Led Weaning principles with my daughter. The book is "Baby Led Weaning - helping your baby to love good food" by Gill Rapley and Tracy Murkett.
I also went to a talk about introducing solids and one of the speakers reported that the latest research shows that delaying the introduction of foods like eggs, wheat and dairy beyond 6 months of age has not reduced the incidence of allergies to these foods.

Everything I have read says yolks only starting at 6-8 months, and egg whites can be introduced at age 1 year (but not before due to the higher potential for allergy).

It depends upon who you talk to really. There are so many different opinions on the subject.
There are no allergies to egg in my family and no other dietary allergies so we chose to introduce whole egg at 6 months. My daughter has had whole egg well-cooked in omelettes, zucchini slice, pikelets, meatballs etc. on quite a few occasions and has had no reaction.

Our pediatrician recommended to wait until he is 1 year old. This is because of allergies.

I started giving my children the yolks around 9mos. It is advised to wait until one year to give whole eggs or egg whites because of allergies and/or the danger of salmonella and related bacteria.

There are a lot of different opinions about adding eggs depending on your family's medical history. Generally you can introduce egg yolk before whites any time from 6-12months but egg whites should be held off until at least a year or two.
