I personally used a personal potty for my son for the first while. Just to get him used to it. I also let him play with the regular toilet (like letting him flush) to make sure he wasn't scared of it.
I liked the kids potty because it was smaller, more his size. I then graduated onto a clip on for the regular toilet. He's finally big enough to be able to crawl up there on his own when he needs to go, which is why we switched.
