I would follow what everyone else has said and just go with your gut instinct, because 99.9% of the time if not everytime you are right about your baby. No one knows them as well as you do. You are the expert and if your doctor/ped is making you feel unsure, then try and find a new one, as they should be supportive of you. As a new mum you have enough to worry about without this kind of thing being said. My girls and now son, have all gone thru really chubby phases and then had massive growth spurts. It all works out over time.

First off, no doctor should ever say that. It is an irrelevant opinion. The proportions of your son are normal. I have two boys Knox @ 9 months and 2 weeks was 30.6 lbs and 31.7 inches long, Corbin @ 9 1/2 months was 22.4 and 28.5 inches long. Knox was very much on the big side, but he was also almost 10 lbs when he was born. My girl was good sized and @ 1 year she was 25lbs and 31 inches long. LOL, sorry I have their growth charts right here by the computer....

Secondly, It all has to do with the size at birth as to how they grow and how they should grow.

If I was you I would find another pediatrician. Saying anything like that is so unprofessional.

Do not with hold food from your baby. He is a baby and needs nutrition. Be sure to take any clues to when he is done eating, he will let you know by any number of ways. They know when they are full (unless they have a condition, they dont eat more than they need, and by the sounds of it your son is normal)

Best of luck to you!

my son was over 9 pounds when he was born. at his 9 month check up he had doubled his weight. after that he hit a huge growth spurt! he his eleven months old now and weighs around twenty five pounds. he his also almost as tall as his 2 year old brother! i started worring that i was feeding my son too much bc he acted hungry all the time so i fed him all the time. my doctor said that the baby knows best, and as long as they are happy they r fine. i wouldn't worry a bit!

I have a very petite baby girl... Still at 11 months she is only 18 pounds and that is with clothes and a diaper on...As long as baby is moving around (crawling/ walking) then I would say he is just fine... Every baby is different...

WOW... When my baby was 10 months old at his check up he weighed 21.4 and the doctor told me that if he went down in his percentile any more that we would have to start upping his calories... he went from 95th percentile to 75th percentile to now 50th percentile. He has stayed between 19 and 21.4 lbs for about 4 months, but I just assume he is thinning up because of him crawling and moving as much as he does... he's not fat!! :) Goodness gracious!!! Also, his height is 28 inches and they said he was kind of short... I couldn't believe that!

Find a new Dr. It is very rude to call a 10 mo. old baby fat. My Dr. mentioned they don't really start worrying about this until around 2 years because it changes so much. My daughter was 20 lbs. at her 9 mo. check up and the Dr. was happy with this. She was less than the 3rd percentile at birth. There is no need to cut down on his food if you are giving him plenty of healthy choices. When they start walking, they slim down. Don't worry about it!!

My boy weighs 22 lbs. I swear he had a growth spurt the other night and grew right before my eyes. I can't believe your doctor said that to you. If he/she continues to bully you that way I would switch peds. Ask around...your friends should be able to recommend a good one. I had to do that when I was unhappy with my pediatrician. Now we love our doctor :)

The doctor didn't have any concerns, although he sounds like a big boy he really is slim :0) my husband is 6'4 so I'm sure they assume my son is going to be big. In comparison to my little one, yours sounds just fine!!

I cant believe your doctor called your son fat! At 20lbs he is hardly fat. My daughter is 10 and a half months old and weighs 19lb 1oz and is about 30th percentile so its hardly big! Some people are just crazy! But it is annoying eh!

[deleted account]

D was 21.5lb (55%) & 31"(97%+) @ 9m. He was 8.15lb & 21.5" when born. Your baby seems right on tract. When your baby begins to crawl more, you will see a drop in weight so don't worry at all.

At his 10 month visit, my son weighed 23lbs 12oz, and was 26 inches long. Our doctor said he looks great and is very happy, and said he's not fat. He is in the 84th percentile for weight and only the 24th percentile for height, but she said all babies grow at different rates and once he goes from cruising to walking he will slim down - plus if he hits a height growth spurt he'll slim out visually, too. I'm not worried about it!

My son is now 10 1/2 months, but at his 9-month check-up he weighed 20 lbs and was 28 inches long. I'm not sure how much he weighs now because I take him to the doctor every 3 months. He has consistently gained about 2 lbs every month; the only month he gained 3 lbs was when he first started eating cereal and baby food. So he probably will weigh about 24 lbs when he makes 11 months on the 21st of July.

i just recently changed my pediatrician and when i brought my son to his new pediatrician for his 9 month check up, he was 24lbs 10oz and 30 inches. she told me he was overweight and i needed to stop feeding him so much. i gave her a run down of what my son eats and she told me to stop feeding him formula, only use about 4 oz of formula in between meals as a snack. needless to say, i didnt listen to her...you have to follow your mothers intuition on matters such as these, and keep in mind your family genes and your partners family genes. i dont feel as though my son is fat/overweight. his father is almost 6'4", kinda looks like a string bean, really tall and skinny. while my family is about average height but we are all "big boned". plus you have to look at how active your child is. if they arent that active than of course its expected that they will be a bit chubbier, but once they start getting really active they will slim down. i have noticed that since my son has started walking and almost running away from me, he is starting to slim down, plus he is also going through a growth spurt.....i wouldnt worry about it, in my opinion a chubby baby is a healthy baby

Your baby is not fat because when I took my daughter to her 9 month appt. she was a little over 21 lbs. (Now 22 lbs) and they said she wasn't fat but she was at the top of her weight for her age. So whoever told you that TOTALLY wrong. My advice so that he won't become overweight is that between bottles feed him whole grain snacks or yogurt melts.

what a mean doctor!! At my son's 8mth check up, he was 11.5kg (23pds) and 76cm (30inch). He started of being a nice 'normal' (average) 7lb6oz and 20.5inches but sky rocketed to the 98th percentile for both height and weight within a few mths. My child health nurse is very pleased with his growth and compliments me on my feeding. He was exclusively BF for the first 6mths and BLW solids after that. Ignore your doctor, you're baby is just thriving! I don't think you can worry too much about weight until well into their second year, once they start walking etc. Unless you are giving them too much junk food off course. :-)

I have noticed that the docs these days are very text book. They have your baby on a line graph with percentiles etc..and if you are up or down on the darn line graph they tell you foolishness and panic. Chloe is a small baby in the 10th percentile..25-26 inches long and 10 months..at her 9 month check she was 14.9 lbs and her doc gave me this face like I am not feeding my baby. Chloe is breast fed...and very healthy. just small like mom and dad. Now she is almost 16 lbs and I am not worried. If you are in a practice with different Ped doc just change to one who will not tell you foolishness.

My daughter was seen this week for an ear re-check (she's had multiple ear infections). She weighed 25lb 8 oz and was 31 inches long. I don't believe your son is large. Our doctor has made comments that "bad eating habits start young". Our daughter is just following in her father's foot steps. He was about 31 lbs at a year. Oh and my baby girl is 10 1/2 months old (DOB: 8/20/09)

Her father is a big guy and she weighed over 7lbs when she was born (already in the 95th percentile). As long as your son is healthy and you're not over feeding him, he should be fine.

When we went for our 9 month, my daughter was 27 inches long and just under 16 lbs. The doctor was satisfied with where she fell on the growth charts as she has always measured small since birth. I think the main thing that they consider is that she is making positive strides in her growth and developement. It was really inappropriate for the Dr. to say your child was "fat". That comment would upset me too. Maybe next time you should ask for a better explanation of her "terms"- the Dr. could maybe explain his or her concerns better-especially if they realize that they offended you.

I can't believe your doctor called your child fat.. that is uncalled for and shouldnt be allowed. Every baby is different and if your son enjoys his meals and your happy giving him what you are then keep doing it. You son will soon lose weight once he is more active. My niece is 13 months and only weighs 17lb 11oz and eats all the time and is very active, my daughter is 10 months and weighs 18lb 13oz doesnt eat much but still very active so it just shows every baby is different. x
