My son is 7 months I know when its time for him to sit up he will. He has been trying to by himself. What worries me is when I put him in a sitting position he likes it but tends to lean forward.... I wonder is it part of the process of sitting?

Firstly i agree with everyone here...every baby is different. I gave up reading books that said your child should be doing 'this' by such an age!! My son has been sitting up pretty much unassisted since 5months (7 1/2 mths now) but he never liked tummy time either, and he can roll from back to tummy but refuses to roll from tummy to back. He also isnt crawling or getting any teeth yet. But he is 'normal' and healthy and that is all that matters xx

My son will be 8 months old on the 13th. He's been sitting up by himself for a few months now. He's climbing up on things and walking along the couch or tables. All babies are different. Just have patience and encourage them every day, and they'll come around! One second you're posting your concern, then the next thing you know they'll be running around!! =] good luck!

Desi can sit unassisted for a long time, but doesn't get that way on his own. He pulled himself up twice while on his changing table, but that was a couple of weeks ago and no attempts at doing it again. He actually loves being upright but it was not so for tummy time. He's super curious and it allows him to see more. It's normal for milestones to be different, though. You should ask your pediatrician. She will be better able to gauge your son's awareness and progress. Also, if your baby was a preemie, he might hit milestones later.

I have found that Ebony has got really good at sitting up, i can sit her with cushions around her and she'l sit un-supported for several minutes, balancing herself, though sometimes she does topple over !! I got her a baby ring to sit in which she loves, also lots of tummy time and floor time helps stregnthen their back ready for sitting !!

my daughter is 7 months also. she doesnt sit up by herself either. her docters sid its ok because every child is different and she'll do it when shes ready. as for the wallker, maybe he feels insacure because its something new. try sitting on the floor when hes in it and play with him to get him to relax. above all keep at it and he will come around.

i don't know what to say but my son is 7 months and has been sitting up sitting he was a week shy of being 5 months old. my daughter too was 5 months old when she sat up. i do have many friends whose babies didn't sit up alone until they were at least 8 or nine months. i know that babies who used the bumbo chairs were more likely to sit up early. maybe try that. good luck

My son is 7.5mos and he is crawling quite a bit now. One moment he is here and the next he is across the room! He amuses himself with tummy time for about 20mins and then wants to be held. He can sit for about 2 mins and then falls over. I was a bit worried about that at first, but after reading these posts, I am no longer worreid. He loves his walker, sometimes, and will push himself around in it. I think all babies progress at different times (he is my third child). My oldest never crawled and my middle only crawled for about a month. They will get there when they are good and ready, have no fear!

My daughter is 7 months old and is not sitting up on her own. We (me and my mom) call it the round butt. Sometimes they get things going early and other times they take a while. Nothing to be worried about. You can try using a boppie pillow or just regular pillows and use that to prop him up. He needs to get the hang of sitting up. Just give it time though. He will do it. All babies grow at there own pace. Like i said nothing to be worried about. Jenkins Family

My daughter just started to sit up by herself and she is almost 7 months. I started to sit her up next to me on the couch or in front of me and hold her hands to try to get her to balance. She kept leaning over and playing most of the time but you could see that progress was starting to be made over time. It took a while.

I have triplets who will be 8 months old nxt week. My daughter will sit up without my assistance for about 5 min... the boys are a little more of challenge. Each kid is different but just challenging them a little more each day with tummy time or whatever is great. Our kids love the exersaucer!!! That has probably really helped them to sit up better as well as a bumbo. Good luck!!

My daughter figured out sitting on her own about a month ago. She slowly got the hang of it over a few weeks. We have a Bumbo and that really helped her get the support she needed and to get used to sitting. If you haven't tried that, you might want to look into it. They're not too expensive and can totally be used again. :)

Every baby is different! No need to worry if he isn't doing what other babies do. It looks like plenty of little ones are in the same boat. My daughter has been sitting up and crawling since about 5 months and has pulled up to stand for the last month and even started letting go to stand alone about 2 weeks ago. She is a little over 7 months old. They all develop at their own pace.

My son Matthew is 6 months and is sitting pretty well. He does occasionally fall over and will just roll for side to side until you get him back up lol, but is doing really well. When I first tried to get him sitting up I used a Boppy pillow around his back (butt) and cradled it around his legs just to give him a little help with the balance. He seemed to catch on pretty quickly. If you have one you may want to try that. He will do it when he's ready though. Hope this helps! Good Luck.

My second is almost 7 months, hes still not sitting up, everytime I try to work with him he just bends in half, apparently he'd rather be on his belly. My husband is so proud cause Rusty does planks :-) He's almost crawling but has absolutely no interest in sitting up. My first was the oposite he wanted to be up and in everthing, he sat up at 5 months, and hated being on his tummy, he was also walking at 10 months. All babies are different. Don't worry yourself too much about it, work with him helping him practice, try using a boppy to cushion his falls. He'll sit up when hes ready.

My son is 7months & 2 weeks and has been sitting up since about 6 months and has been crawling for the past 2 1/2 weeks and is even trying to stand up. But he is VERY independant and wants to get into everything. There is a little girl at his daycare that is a week older than him and she barely sits up and makes not effort to crawl. So I wouldn't worry about it, trust me your little one will be all over the place in no time and you'll miss the days when you could just lay him in the floor to play, lol!!

Reign is sitting up by herself but is still working on balancing herself...not long before she's off to the side lol...try putting him on the floor (a nice big space) with a pillow supporting him, but put some toys a short distance away that should encourage him to sit up in order to get to them( i hope you get it lol)....it works for Reign, and a few other babies I know. If it doesn't don't sweat it all babies move at their own pace...Reign can't sit up that well but is crawling, go figure lol

My daughter has been sitting up on her own for quiet a while now, but I know that it's normal that every baby is different, and they hit different milestones at different times. I have a cousin that was having trouble sitting up when she was 8 months. I would let your doctor know and he/she could have a few tips for you to try out. We used a bumbo (which is like a booster seat and will support the child) She seemed to like it and soon after we were using it daily, she was able to sit up on her own. Best of luck, your little man will get there, just have patience

Totally agree with the moms saying that the baby does everything what he does when he/she is ready for that. My son will be 7 months in a week, he can't sit up by himself yet, but he is actively trying - he could manage lifting his head and shoulders from the floor yet:-))) He likes playing with his toys while sitting with my hand around his waste, I sometimes take my hand away from him (ready to catch him if he falls) to let him practice balancing his body by himself and we also do some simple exercises to strengthen his back muscles. I read that it is great when a baby starts crawling before sitting - less risk of spine problems in the future, so I'm helping my baby start crawling and moving more than sitting - he spends about 80% of his time on the playing mat on the floor.

dont worry if your baby isnt sitting up yet.. my baby may sit up, but has no interest on staying on his belly & resting on his elbows for any length of time..
guess babies do everything on their own time.

My son is 7 months old and has been sitting unassisted for about a month or so. He also hated tummy time and was the most happiest upright so he developed sitting skills before scooting on his tummy skills. He now loves tummy time and is soooo close to crawling!!

I wouldn't fret too much about your baby not sitting, though. Everything will fall into place when he is ready. Just keep on helping him sit so he gets the idea and develops the muscles and coordination to do so. I would sit my son in a boppy and a bumbo and between my legs and propped up on the couch or chair or bed with pillows (with me close by, of course!) and one day he just got it. It started off shaky, of course, where he was very topsy turvy, but with practice he mastered the skill....and so will your baby!

I try everyday to help him sit up and briefly letting go to see if he can stabilize himelf..just keep trying and eventually his muscles will strengthen.

My son started sitting at about 6.5 months...but we definetly had to practice. He hates "tummy time" and showed interest in sitting, so each day I would sit him in between my legs for a while to let him play. His distraction were his toes (he kept trying to eat them, folding himself in half). I ended up using a taller toy that he could hold on to, and that definetly seemed to help. I too, use a bebe pod (like a bumbo) and my son, who is now 7.5 months actually eats solids in this seat, (not sure if it helped him learn to sit) but I think sitting in the seat was a nice change in vantage point for him...

She loves being on her tummy and rolls from one end of the room to the other and can army crawl she is trying to get up on to her knees but not quite making it.

We dont have a walker but we use a door bouncer which my daughter loves she smiles and giggles away when we put her in this. Maybe your little boy would like it too and it would keep him in an upright position although not sitting but a least he wouldnt be able to lie back and it would build up his leg, neck and back muscles thats what im hoping will work for our little one x

This is totally normal, Trust your baby that he knows what is best for his body. Babies always do what they can do. When he is ready he will get there. I never did tummy time and now my little one is rolling over on her own and loves being on her tummy because she was ready. I don't put her into a sitting position because I believe when her body is ready she'll be able to et their herself. A baby has the most freedom of movement when they are on their backs until they can change position themselves. I don't know if you've notced but when a baby is propped into a sitting position they are stuck. They often can't get down or reach for anything that isn't right next to them. The other thing that can happen is when they are proped up they sit in such a way that puts stress and discomfort on the back. The body memorizes this stressful position and begins to assume this tense state is normal. If he does it on his wn he will have the muscle strength to support his spine and will sit up nice and straight. There have been a couple studies that show by 18 months babies that have been put into positions and those who have not are all doing the same thing by 18 months but the quality of movement is different . Those who have found their own way tend to be more graceful and sure of their bodies. In short don't worry he's doing fine :)
