how much is your 4 month old drinking, my baby is still at 4oz and i don't know if she should be drinking more, so i'm curious to see if anyone else is in the same situation. And because i feel she eats so little i don't know if i should be adding cereal to her bottle yet???? (she does seem satisfied with the 4oz of formula, but all my friends babies are drinking more). hmmmmm any thoughts

I think one of the big problems with bottle feeding is you can see what they eat and our culture feels the need to quantify and average everything. With breastfeeding you just have to assume their getting enough.

Basic rule of thumb is if they put on weight and arent hungry all the time, they're getting enough. It doesnt really matter how much weight gain as long as its happening although 3 - 5 oz for breast fed and 5 - 7 oz for fornmula fed is average.

Putting cereal in bottles is a choking hazard and shouldnt still be being recommended although it is by GPs who dont keep their knowledge current and relatives who did it 30 years ago. If she isnt demanding more food, she doesnt need anything else. Dont stress about numbers - even if there was a baby manual she wouldnt have read it :)

My 4 1/2 month old son only eats between 2 and 4 ounces every feeding...and he gains weight perfectly fine...he's a healthy 13 pounds, 1 ounce...as long as they are gaining weight and seem satisfied your baby should be fun...but always ask a pedatrician if you doubt anything...that's what they are there for :)

My son will be 5 months on the 25th, and he still only drinks 4 oz. I try to give him a little more, but he never finishes it, and I don't want to waste it. My doctor said that with the solid foods and the formula he should be satisfied. I never put cereal in the bottle, I just spoon fed him and he learned pretty quick.

my daughter is 5 months old and still only takes 4 oz at a time. She takes roughly 8 bottles a day though so she gets about 32 oz total for the day, plus eats fruit or vegetable for dinner. She is gaining weight and is happy, so we go with it. Do what feels right with you and your baby.

I have 5 kids. So much changes from one kid to the next. There are a lot of "text book" moms who follow every guideline. You have to go with your gut for the most part. Each one of my kids were different from night and day. My 4 girls were hearty eaters and while my son started out breastfeeding he is now on formula. I make him 7 oz bottles. The "rule" is that if they finish a bottle then maybe they need more but my son sometimes finishes 7 oz (especially the first one of the morning, he sleeps all night) and other times he only drinks 5-6. I give him one cereal bottle a day and he eats ist foods. (He is trying to sit up). My youngest daughter didn't eat solids til she was around 6 mos due to her not sitting up as early as he did. Everything you read will contradict each other as will different doctors.

My 5 1/2 month old drinks 6oz every 3 hours. If your baby is gaining weight and is healthy then don't worry so much. Every baby is different. Try giving her 5oz, if she finishes it, then she might be ready to move up in oz. She'll let you know when she's done.

I wouldnt be feeding her any solids till close to 6 months, you can wreck their stomach lining if you do it too early. My son has close to 240ml (4oz is like 120ml). But he guzzles it down... boys tend to be different to girls anyway.... i wouldnt worry ... formula bulks out babies anyway.

My twins are almost 5mos (on the 14th). They were drinking 4oz every 3hrs. At our 4mos dr's appt our Dr told us to offer them more and see if they were interested. Every kid is different. My daughter is an eater and will take the whole 6oz bottle every time. My son on the other hand will vary depending on how hungry he is. He let's us know though and we just give him anywhere between 4-6oz each feeding but their last feeding before bedtime they both eat 7oz since they sleep for 12hrs. I would suggest to offer your daughter more and just see how she responds. My dr said not to put cereal in their bottle so I spoon feed them. Well my daughter takes it but my son isn't understanding spoon feeding too well. Good luck!

My son is about to be 5 months old, and he's already taking 6oz. I have a very helpful book called "The Baby Book" by William Sears M.D and Martha Sears R.N and it says that babies between 2-6 months should be eating 4-6oz, and 6-12 months should be taking up to 8oz per feeding, so I don't think you have anything to worry about. I had the same concern when my son was 2 months, he was only eating 2oz. I hope this information was helpful to you.

my baby takes between 4 and 6oz every 2 hours and at bed time she gets some rice cereal as well. I would say that if she seems satisfied then let it be, and if shes gaining weight fine then the better. I have noticed that babies will stop eating when they are full and if you try to force feed them then they will throw it all back up. sometimes mine will be happy with 4 oz but them about 30min-about an hour later she'll want her last 2oz.

My four month old girls drink anywhere from 3 to 5 ounces. If your baby seems satisfied and is gaining weight at each doctor visit, I wouldn't add cereal or try to get her to eat more. Ask your doctor when you should introduce cereal.

Babies will let you know when they need more. If she is satisfied she is satisfied. You could try and space here feeds out to see if she will take more. If you want here to have more you could try solids, i.e cereal, baby food, as long as she is developmently ready for it.

If she is satisfied with the 4 oz every 3 hours or so, then she should be fine. She will let you know when she is hungry. You could add some cereal just to get her used to it. My daughter is 4 months also. She takes a cereal bottle and her next bottle she takes about 4-5 oz. of milk. So, you're doing great!

My niece was given fruit first and then on she wouldnt ever eat the vegetables. I was told try the vegs first before the sweets (fruit) but best of luck to you as a mom! I know this is my first so I am learning!

My son is over 18 lb at 4 mo old and is exclusively breastfed...but when I pump and he gets bottles at daycare he only eats about 4 oz every 2-3.5 hours...even then he spits up a lot of it. I wouldn't worry about it, I guess, unless shes not gaining weight. We tried cereal at 4 mo and he ate it and then SCREAMED for 2 hours after and was up most of the night...decided to wait until he is closer to 6 mo. You are doing just great!! Congratulations and hang in there! :)

As long as she is gaining nicely, I wouldn't obsess. I see you are doing formula but with breastmilk (if you are doing both) the milk changes per their needs. My daughter eats anywhere from two to four ounces of breastmilk (using the pre and post weight method) and is growing nicely.

Please PLEASE do not add cereal to her bottle. Serious choking hazard. Any doctor will advise you against it. Cereal, however, can be given as early as 4 months - and I was informed yesterday by my ped that you can start solids as early as 5 months now (was 6). If she's not satisfied with 4 oz, consider giving her a spoonful or two of cereal after her bottle... or even increasing her bottle by an ounce.

i'd really talk to your pedi about adding cereal to the bottle. it's a no-no now a days. so i'm told. mine had tummy issues with the cereal and went right to gerbers added to formula feedings, go figure. he just turned 5 months. definately talk to your pedi about increasing oz and where you should be. we got the solid litterature at 4 month ck up. he is a supported sitter and can do stage 1 and hommade squash, sweet potato, etc.

I think @ 4 months it should be about 30-32oz a day. mine was at 6 oz by then and is pretty much 7-8oz now... he just started solids too, and get's 2 2.5oz gerber or hommade a day with his bottles.

Just wanted to put my two cents in :) My daughter is 19 weeks and is still on a liquid only diet. I breastfeed when she is hungry, about every 2-4 hrs and when I pump its usually about 4 oz that shes drinking. I have NOT added any cereals or foods to her diet since she is only just over 4 months and shes a healthy weight and is satisfied with breastmilk. At this point I`m in no hurry to introduce foods as I was told around 6 months is when to bring in the cereal since at 4 months she doesnt sit on her own yet and feeding food through a bottle could cause choking. If your bundle of joy seems hungry all the time then you should speak with your doctor however I would just go with the flow. Every child is different and you know her better than any of us do. Keep up the good work and remember you are a great mom!

Is she hungry after she eats the 4 oz? How often does she eat? Have you changed the flow of the nipple from to slow to medium? My 5 month old eats 6-8 ounces 4times a day and is on cereal/fruit/veggies 2 x a day. I would not put cereal in the bottle. I think they should know the bottle is for a drink and food is eaten with utensils. I started to introduce cereal at 4 months 1x a day 1 tblspoon mixed with formula.
Hope this helps! :)

My mom was worried about the fact that she wasnt at 8 oz bottles yet cuz as she would put it, "you kids were at 8ozs at a month old". i say if you are worried make her a 6 oz bottle and if she drinks more then 4oz then she wants more and if she doesnt then shes full. Babys know when they are full and when they are ready to increase the amount they eat. All you can do as a mom is try it out. hope that helped
