My son is small...

My son will be 1 tomorrow the 13th and he still only weighs 17 lbs (only 3rd percentile), he was a full term healthy 7lb 8oz baby, and the doctor doesn't seem to be worried about it but I am. He was diagnosed with the swine flu at 5 weeks and ever since that time he has had trouble gaining weight. He eats more than he should, but he just isn't gaining anything. Anybody have any advice? I am wondering if maybe I should find another doctor and get a 2nd opinion. Please help if you can.

I would try not to stress yourself out about your childs size. The drs have had me get every test from CF to hgh for my daughter because shes 26 inches and 17 lbs at 1 year. Kids grow at their own pace. I finally got a new ped who doesnt use the scale saying she son the 3rd % for blah blah blah. The new ped does a bmi and says shes healthy and just going to be small. My daughter actually fell off that scale because she got sick at 6 months and was 13 lbs. If you really are concerned have them do the blood tests.

My pediatrican had suggested to me to add more proteins in my daughter's diet to get her to gain some weight - 6 TBSP a day she should be having. More meat, beans, a little bit of egg etc... She was 6 pounds at birth and weighs 22 pounds now. In the first year babies triple their birth weight but the big weight gain slows down after the age of one. I was also told to make sure that there is 3 square meals a day PLUS 3 snacks a day. 8 am breakfast, 10:30 Am snack, lunch at noon and a 2 pm snack, 5pm dinner and a 7 pn snack. They need the snacks to help with growth and can't really go with only 3 meals a day without any snacks.

You say he eats a lot, is he very active, perhaps he's burning off the calories. My little one only weighs 18 lbs and she just turned a year on the 8th.

it doesn;t hurt to get another opinion, but my son was born 9 lbs. 5 oz. and now only weighs 21 lbs. he is quite tall for his age as well. he doesn't gain weight very easily and it seems like as soon as he does he gets sick and loses it. some kids are just smaller than others, and as long as your son seems happy, and is active and eating and reaching all of his milestones it's probably nothing to be concerned about

I would trust your instincts and ask for a second opinion, my son is 1 today, weighs 16 and half pounds, below the 3rd percentile. I've been worried about his weight for months, but kept being told it's ok (since I have a small built), turns out he has Vit D deficiency that was pre-rickets, but was the reason he wasn't growing.

Hi, my daughter was born at 7lbs 3.3 oz and we weighed her the other day and she weighs 16lbs 8 oz. and will be a year on wednesday and my docter doesnt have a problem with it and it really doesnt bother me. As long as she stays active and keeps eating there is nothing I can do

I think I would get another opinion.. Seems low, for a full time baby to me, I'm not an expert.. but it wouldn't hurt to get other opinion, just to be safe;)
