My Joanna made 9 months on Monday 24 May and since then she has been pulling her hair out in chunks!!! She does this while she breastfeeds. Any other babies doing this? Anyone has an idea what is going on? BTW, there's enough breast milk so I don't think it's the frustration of not having enough. I now have to hold her hand to stop her from pulling out more hair and I'm getting quite concerned. Please help!

Thanks ladies for your responses. I think she does this for lack of a better thing to do with her hands. She's pinching and even hitting herself, all this as she feeds, especially when she is sleepy. I still have to hold her free arm but I think its a phase that will pass. Thanks y'all again.

my kids have never pulled their hair out, but they have all really enjoyed scratching and pinch the heck out of my breasts while nursing. . maybe it is a comfort to her, sounds weird but i have noticed that with my kids.

My daughter pulls at her hair sometimes, too, but I haven't noticed her pulling any out. I can't tell you why. She does it at all different times, not just nursing. I'm just assuming that it's a phase that will pass.

my son pulls on his hair while feeding but he doesn't rip it out. he used to though, when he was younger. maybe she has a dry scalp or maybe she is just stressed out or anxious or something. check with your doctor.

my baby does the same too every time she's breastfeeding or when she's sleepy....i don't think there's something wrong...i see it as their habit..lol.. i don't really take it seriously.. every time she's doing like that, i let her hold a toy so she'll get busy holding it and stop pulling her hair..works well... Goodluck to you!

Wow...that must be hard for you and her. I really have never heard of this, but maybe she is frustrated that the milk is not coming out fast enough? Have you ever given her a bottle with breastmilk or formula? I have issues with my son scratching all the time so I put socks over his hands. That may help your daughter too. Good luck finding out her troubles.
