I have read and have also done the following... hold them until you see them "fading" and then go lay them in their bed. I have triplets and they all put themselves to sleep now at 8 months. Sometimes they still want to be held a little extra time, but mostly they want to be layed down. Good luck!!

i feed my little girl and right after i burp her i lay her down.. she cries for a little while.. I usually shower and then she's usually asleep once i get out.. the shower helps not be able to hear her.. what time are you putting him down? I usually keep my daughter up til 9:30 to 10 pm.. and she'll sleep all night..

I agree 100% with you Lyn. We had the same problem. Baby would only fall asleep if being breast feed. Gee it was exhausting! Had to be tough. But it has really paid off! He is completely capable of self soothing and has woken up less frequently at night and takes much longer naps than before now. I hated the idea of letting him cry, but it is good for him. I guess it's good training for having to discipline them in the future. :) My mum calls it tough love!

My wee girl is 7 months old tomorrow and she was like this until a month or so ago. I ended up giving her the bottle then putting her down in her cot and letting her scream. It was really hard and there were times that my husband had to hold me back from going to her but it paid off. Now she goes down fine. I have the same exact routine every night so she knows what is away to happen - bath at 7.30 massage straight after which is quiet calm and relaxing and then bottle then cot. I will warn you if you do this it is really really hard not to go comfort them but like I say this only lasted about a week before she clicked that I wouldnt hold her to go to sleep.
