"Sleeping through the night?"

I have a 3.5 month old and the first question everybody asks me about her is always, "Is she sleeping through the night yet?"

How many hours is considered "sleeping through the night"? My daughter's bedtime always seems to be 1.5 - 2 hours after she's woken up from her last nap, but never seems to be at a consistent time (anywhere between 5:30pm and 9ish.) Sometimes she sleeps 4 hours at a time and sometimes as many as 8 hours. Is anybody else having the same inconsistency with your baby's night time sleeping patterns?

Luckily my 3 1/2 month old has been sleeping thru the night since she was 2 months. By thru the night I mean 10pm-6am. She's been very consistant since the first time. Knock on wood. Lol.

i have a great baby...sleeps through the night. he usually goes down anywhere from 9 to 1030 (still working on that) and then he will wake up between 8 and 9 in the morning, i am a very happy mommy also!! he is formula fed...and eats every 2 to 3 hours during the day. his naps are not on a schedule yet...we are still working on that as well. but he does not wake up during the night, he sleeps through.

I've got a sleeper on my hands too! He was sleeping about 4hrs at night from birth to 2 months and since then he usually goes 5 1/2 to 9 hrs!!! he's breastfed exclusively. Usually doesn't sleep a lot during the day... he takes a 1-2 hr nap in the morning but only a 20-45 min nap every 3-4hrs for the rest of the day til bedtime at 9! I love it such a good little boy :o)

My daughter is 3.5 months and has been sleeping through the night since 9 weeks. She is breastfed also. I followed Babywise and it worked like a charm. I am usually not a book pusher, but this book works wonders and I really recommend it. She goes to bed between 8:30-9:30 and wakes up at 7:00. I am a very happy mommy.

I have always put my baby (nearly 4 mths) on a day routine, which I think has helped with the night sleeping. His bed time is 7pm. I give him a dreamfeed around 9.30pm and he sleeps through til 6am. At one point, he was waking at around 3.30am, but I let him self-settle without feeding him.

My son is a big boy, he weighed over 15lbs a couple weeks ago, and still wakes up every 2-3hrs at night to eat. He has no interest in cereal and I don't believe in putting it their bottles so I'm hoping once he shows some interest than we can start him on it and hopefully he'll sleep a little longer at night. I exclusively breastfeed and did with my first so I kinda figured I wouldn't be getting sleep for a long time, LOL

My little man is a big boy so he's started cereal already. That seemed to eliminate the nighttime feeding for a few days but he's back to waking up for it.

My son is pretty inconsistent at night as well. He's like a clock during the day. He's up for 2 hours, sleeps for one, up for 2, sleeps for one, up for 2, sleeps for one and then is up for about 3 until bedtime. This is when he starts to get a little fussy. I discovered that letting him go to bed when he was ready as opposed to watching the clock works much better for us. I was always trying to keep him up until 8 but he's always ready for bed closer to 7. Nights are crazy! Some nights he sleeps through 10-11 hours but last night he went down at 7, up at 2:30, back down until 5:30. If this evening is anything like normal he's gonna be ready for bed much too early!!!

My daughter is inconsistent as well although she tends to sleeplonger than yours - anywhere from 6 to 11 hours. My doctor told me that babies don't usually get on a schedule until between 4 and 6 months so maybe her bedtime will get more consistent then! My older daughter, who is 2 now, didn't sleep through the night until she was 8 months old! Every child is so different!

Shelly - yes, I am nursing. Are you? I have heard (like Sashell posted) that breastfed babies don't tend to sleep as long as formula fed babies. Also I have heard that lower weight babies tend not to sleep for as many straight hours as heavier babies. My daughter is only 11 lbs so that could be a factor also, perhaps, making her not ready for an all-night sleep. Maybe we'll just have to wait until we introduce them to cereal for them to sleep longer at night.

6 hours is "Sleeping Through the Night"
My daughter sleeps at least that. She will sleep 8-10 hours if I let her, but I always set my alarm in case she doesn't wake me. If you are not nursing exclusively there is a new formula by Enfamil called Restfull. That helped my daughter sleep when she was fussy and went through her "I want to eat 2 oz every 2 hours" phase lol. It is better than putting rice cereal in their bottle. If you are nursing, those babies usually sleep less because they burn breastmilk calories much faster than formula calories.

I'm going through the same thing with my little girl! I feel the same way you do. I consider about 6-8 hrs straight sleeping through the night, maybe ours just aren't ready for all nite? Are you nursing?
