I have been looking around the site and I found a Community called ASL - American Sign Language but I figure since we are Aussie Mums that maybe there was a Community for AUSLAN and there is not so I have started one.

My little girl is not deaf but my husband and I decided when I was pregnant that we would like to teach our little one signing, just for communication while she was unable to talk. It is a fun and interactive way to communicate with your child at the pre-verbal stage.

We have been signing to her since she was 4 months old - only 6 basic signs that we were using everyday - she is now almost 1 year old and knows what we are talking about when we sign but she is yet to sign back. Is anyone else using sign language whether it be for a deaf or hearing child?

Great to hear of your sucess story Lee. :) I remember how excited when our little girl was signing but now she's stopped. Lol.
Since I first wrote on this post I've been doing baby hands (signing) classes with my daughter. She's now 10months and has stopped signing to us but she understands milk, bath, eat, drink, more and finished.
How is you little girl doing with her signing Melinda?

hi,

We to ae teaching our daughter to sign, she isn't deaf bt we thought it would be better to comune this way than have her upset as we dont understand one another.

I started to teach her at about 6 mnths and she first signed back to us at about 10mnths.Her first sign was milk as it was the main thing she had and needed often.

Now at 1and1/2 she signs drink, water, eat(hungry) and poo.

Just keep at it and believe me you will notice it.try to keep just the 1 sign and then after she shows you that then try the rest. She may be overwhelmed with more than one.

It does work .

Oh Brodie, that is fantastic, I am still waiting for our first sign :(

Yes I know it is hard to find Auslan stuff out there, it is mostly ASL which is somewhat different to Auslan, considering we live in Australia I find it quite silly!! I walked the bookstores all over the place and found the Internet had some helpful info and yes I have some info for you:-

www.australianbabyhands.com

www.tinyhandstalk.com

www.bilby.net

www.signplanet.net

www.auslan.org.au

check these out and see what you like, Australian Baby Hands has flash cards and other stuff you can purchase and a free download of a couple of basic signs. I have used this the most. Auslan.org has a sign bank, you type in the sign and a sample sign comes up. Look at them all and see which best suits you.

Good Luck :)

My partner and I also decided to sign with our daughter (now eight months) when I was pregnant.
I've been signing to her on and off since birth (just to get myself in the habit) and this past week she's started to sign milk :)
Have you found and flash cards or books using auslan? Most of the books and things I find are ASL. If you know any good ones for auslan could you let me know?
Thanks and good luck signing :)

Oh that sounds great Jennie-Lee, great job. I cant wait for our little one to sign back, it just seems to be taking a while. The tantrums would be nice to avoid, she is generally a pretty placid baby but is showing signs of frustration lately. Nice to hear some good stories, I will keep at it, thanks :)

We did baby sign language then auslan from when our daughter was about four months old(she is now 22 mths). It is sooo worthwhile! For ages it seems like your doing it for nothing then all of a sudden she was signing back all the signs you have been teaching! Now she just has to be shown a sign once and she remembers it. It really cut down on tantrums before she could talk properly.
