This may seem like a silly question but. I'm 38wks and was wondering what you mums do when you get petrol and your on your own? It seems silly to me to take the baby out of the car (especially if it's sleeping) just to pay for the fuel. What do you all do?

My boy is nearly 3 now, & I leave him in the car, but take the keys & lock the doors & run in quickly. When he was smaller I'd take him in if he was awake, coz he'd cry if he saw me walk away, but if he was sleeping, I'd just do the same thing.

I either get my husband to fill up or I fill up on my way home from work before I do the day care pickup. If I can't do that I leave him in the car strapped in his seat and actually wait in the car until the queue has died down so I can walk straight in and out.

Since I first commented on his post I had surgery and it was difficult for me to get my daughter in and out of the car. That being said I still NEVER left her by herself. I would make sure I had the right cash, pump my fuel and give it to the customer next to me to pay, I haven't had any problems. If I did it's all on camera that I handed out money and the worst thing that could happen is I would have to shell out another $20 which is better than risking something happening to my daughter.

ALWAYS take the baby/toddler/pre-schooler out. Disturbing a sleeping baby is better than risking someone crashing into the car/petrol pump...it does happen and you'd never forgive yourself if your only excuse was 'it seemed silly to disturb them'...

I usually park right next to the door. It's easier if you have cash other than card. It has to be done can't avoid it!

i get my fiance to do it if he can, but i always take my baby with me, even if he is sleeping, im so worried that someone will steal him or report me for being a bad mum for leaving him in there while i pay for petrol lol

when i only had one baby i would take him in with me. now that i have 2 under 3 years i try my hardest not to get petrol when i have the kids with me. which is lucky seeing as tho i have a petrol station 2 streets away from my house. i either make sure my partner or my brother is in the car with the kids or i wait until someones at home and just nip round to the petrol station. its much easier that way.. its way to hard to get both kids out then take them into a shop where they will want everything and then get them back into the car.

hehe mixed reviews here!! i stress everytime i go get petrol with my baby but at the end of the day it has to be done!! if shes sleeping i make sure i park right next to the door and lock the doors, run in pay and get back in the car. if shes awake i take her in with me.

Leaving a child (any age) in the car alone is illegal & dangerous! Please never do it, no matter how "inconvenient" it may seem!!!

ive left my daughter in the car once to get petrol and felt so guilty ive never done it again. it might take you an extra few minutes but weighed against the health and safety of your child its worth the extra hassle. you dont know what could happen. there could be a car accident or a petrol fire. i try and have someone else with me when i get petrol its just easier.

PLEASE DON'T LEAVE YOUR BABY IN THE CAR!! It only takes a second for something to go wrong, I know it's a pain I have been through it many many times, try and get someone else to fill the car up for you or fill it right up if you have to take bub with you.

Honestly if I saw a mother leave a baby in the car to get petrol I would call the police and family services, it's neglect.

Please, never leave your children no matter what age they are in the car...
I was working at a tavern in Qld and the police came in looking for the parents, a passer by saw the child in the vehicle and called on them. The police asked the parents what on earth were they doing in the tavern with the child left in the car, they replied "We were hot and needed a drink". Their sheer stupidness cost them the life of their little one.
Another episode, my mother had one of her grandsons in the car whilst she went into the post office. The grandson decided to play with the handbrake, well need I say more...Quite a costly trip from rolling into another parked vehicle...
Please either take your children with you or have an adult in the car waiting with them.

I'm the same I either get hubby to do it or I wait till someone is in the car with me. I'd be to paranoid that something would or could happen.

I get hubby to do it. Especially now that we have two kids. If i do it i get the kids out. If i left them in then i would be worried about if i get run over or something evryone would be focused on that and not realise about the kids in the car. I know the chance of that happening is slim but its just not a risk i am willing to take!

I get my husband to get the petrol each week. I wouldn't like to leave my baby in the car even if you locked it cause the car can reach a hot temp pretty quick that is you live in a hot state and I know you are only in the shop for a few min but what if you get stuck in the queue long than you thought you would. I just find it easier if my husband dose it cause I would have to get my baby out each time.

Melissa, I had the exact same problem. I was wondering if I was being the bad parent leaving my sleeping baby in the car whist I pay for the petrol. But I left her in the car with the windows down and made sure i parked in the shady side of the servo. Make sure you lock the doors as well.

Hi Melissa i used to leave my little one in the car when they were sleeping. Best idea is to judge the situation as and when it arises.
