hi, i have a 2 year old and her father and i have had a horrible relationship. when she was 6 months old he ended up going to prison and a year later he got charged with a sex offender charge. his mom has been somewhat in my daughters life but recently she moved to san antonio 6 months ago and its hard to open up my already busy schedule to her schedule when she wants to see her, but yet she has time to hang out with her friends and drink. 4 days ago she wrote to me saying that shes going to exercise her grandparent rights and she wants every other weekend and wants them to be over night (friday 7pm-sun 6pm) and every other year on major holidays including fathers day. she doesnt help me raise her, i pay for my daughters child care and her other needs. i take her to her appointments and my mom has been my baby sitter since day one! i think shes crazy i dont know what makes her think im going to be ok with this, i really do fear for my life knowing how her son thinks and knowing who she interacts with. should i be worried about her getting any kind of visitations?

Hi Alex,

Well we are going to court this friday. the longest we have ever lived with her was like 4 months after my daughter was born but she never watched my daughter when i was at work or school, that was my mom. All of my other friends are telling me to not worry and to leave it in gods hands and i am and i know i shouldnt worry because if she didnt establish a stable environment for her kids why will she for my daughter? in the past year she has moved 3 times. why? well because she kept going back and forth with two of her boyfriends. but thank you. thank you for your input. my little girl means the world to me and for 2.5 years she has been only use to sleeping with me and living with my family and calling my own dad dad. again thank you alex! this has helped me relax a bit

Hi Karleen,

I had a very similar situation happen just last month. YOU HAVE NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT :). In the state of Texas there are not grandparent rights unless your child lived with her for an extended period of time (multiple months consecutively). My ex boyfriends mom sent me a letter from her attorney telling me to go in and "mediate" so she could have rights to my daughter. I may be 19 but I knew my rights and knew I didn't have to meet her attorney. I sent her attorney a letter back telling her that we will be taking this to court because she will not have unsupervised visitation.

Next thing you know she dropped all charges and was kissing my butt trying to see my daughter. My attorney assured me that even if we went to court, she wouldn't get anything that I wasn't willing to give her.

She is bullying you and clearly does not understand her rights.

I am not sure grandparents have rights. I would make her officially file in children's court.
