Hi, I'm a mom to a 7 year old with high functioning autism. My son is independent and is almost like other kids but he has a hard time with: focusing, sitting for long periods of time, socializing, his speech is delayed but he can tell us what he wants or needs when he wants to. He also had a very hard time with his temper and stemming(he stems so much). He has allergies to pollens and pets. As well as tummy issues. We just recently heard of the GFCF diet and beginning to to research. I think we will start on the 1st of July. He is a very picky eater so this will be interesting. I would appreciate any advice. What worked for you. What didn't. Things to look into and what to avoid. Any help you be great. My husband and I are so ready to tackle this head on and help our lil man.

Hi Sarah, welcome to the group. Sounds like your Son probably has gut issues and even if the gfcf diet doesn't make a huge difference to his speech etc, you will probably find that he will feel better at the very least. My son has just started pooping normally again after a year or longer of chronic diarrhoea, he also seems calmer and can focus better. It doesnt solve everything obviously, but it has definately helped. I have to recommend you read books by Jenny McCarthy, I thought they were an amazing read when I first started, she has "Mother Warriors" "Louder than words" and another "Healing and preventing Autism" or something like that, I can never remember that title. I have heard that many 'picky eaters' actually do really well with accepting new foods, the reason he may be picky is because he is craving certain foods like an addict and will only want these foods, once the foods, such as gluten, start to leave his system he will not crave them so much and may start accepting new foods. It seems silly to say, but food addictions can be much like drug addictions, and in saying that, prepare yourself for withdrawal symptoms, we had a pretty rough time with our son for a couple days to a week, it was very hard to watch and I almost pulled out, but push on, things got better. My advice is to not stress too much about gfcf recipes etc, these can be great for some, but personally I found that keeping most of my old recipes and adapting them had better results and was so much easier, for example, instead of using butter use nuttelex or another butter alternative, in place of milk use soy or rice milk, in place of flour use gf flour, in place of breadcrumbs use rice crumbs etc. Good luck, and remember it does get easier.
