I am currently a resident of southeastern Colorado but am considering a move to the Wichita area. My 6 year old son is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (he is on the higher end of the spectrum) and is having extreme difficulty in school, made worse by the fact that our local school district has no experience with AS children.

Can anyone tell me about schools in Wichita? Is it a good school district for special needs children, and what schools are best? Thanks for your help.

Wichita will evaluate your child and look at your doctor's diagnosis. They have an autistic program where there's only 5-6 autistic children in the classroom. They're not in every school but if that's the best place for your child they will let him go to school out of district and provide bus service.

Eastern Kansas seems to have a good education on autism. I lived in SW Kansas for several years. My 8 year old son has autism and is also on the higher end of the spectrum. He was struggling a lot in western kansas. Last fall we moved to Emporia. It's about an hour north east of Wichita. We were amazed by the schools. They have an intensive skills class(autism class) for K-4, 5-8. And they are able to have inclusion time anytime you think it helps. They work WITH you. It's amazing. Kermit's dog also goes with him. I love this school district. I don't have a lot of knowledge on Wichita schools. I know they have Heartspring and Rainbows United that are special education schools. I could probably get you the phone number for the school district there if you want me to. Just email me if you want to.
