After several months of wondering if my son has Aspergers he was finally diagnosed as having it as well as his OCD. I am so relieved to know why my son has so many issues. Hopefully therapy will help him with some of his issues. My main problem is eating. He only eats a few foods and smells them before he eats. He is really underweight for his age. Any advice would be helpful from you ladies. Thanks.

Hi Julia. How is your son doing? I have spent so many hours researching aspergers and autism and it has helped out so much. Just knowing what he has and how to deal with it finally has been wonderful. Good luck. If you ever want to chat, send me a message!

Melissa - came across your post while looking for information on my son. He, too, is 6. And, after increasing suspicion that something was not right (a couple of years, intensifying difficulty), he was just given the exact same diagnoses: Aspergers and OCD.

I'm hoping therapy can help, too - we're just at the beginning of this journey.

Wishing you all the best,
Julia

ps- wondering if a chart with photos/drawings of smell-approved (by him) in the kitchen might help?

Hi glad to hear you finally got a dx and know whats going on. My son has feeding issues too. Check with your local Occupational therapist. They should be able to direct you to some that does feeding therapy. We have been doing it for 2 years. When we started he only ate foods that where brown and crunchy. Now hes up to about 15 foods. He is also more willing to try new things. They started small by touching foods to his mouth than after awhile he had to kiss the food and finally eat it. Sounds silly but it helps. We also do a chart when he has to eat a none preferred food. The chart shows a drawing of the food and then a number of lines to show the amount of bites he has to take. As he takes each bite we draw a picture of his choice on the line. This allows him to have some control and see exactly how much he has to eat. We started at 1 bite and worked our way up. FOr each five bites he gets a sticker on his chart. When his chart is full he gets to pick a prize from the OTs prize bin. It tooks several months to get him in the swing and actually do it, but it was well worth it! Good Luck!!
