Hi,
I bought a 300 mcg bottle of Melatonin at the Wal Mart today and I asked the pharmacist about dosage and he said 1 should be good, but my son has extreme nightmares that wakes him up about every 2 hours ALL night, and he's also 10 years old and 82 lbs. I have all intentions of asking an actual doctor, but I'm just wondering, for curiosity sake, what are you guys doing dosage wise? Thanks for any help, this is very new to me.

My son is 4 and weighs 43 lbs. He has tourettes, ADHD and an anxiety disorder. Needless to say, it is very tough for him to get into that deep sleep that he needs. Our Pediatrician recommended that we start him on 1.5mg and then as he began to *get used* to the medicine, he was moved to 3mg. He does very well and is getting a good night sleep. We give it to him around 5:30 and he is usually asleep w/in 15 minutes of being put to bed at 8:00 and he wakes up at 7:00.

Hope this helps and good luck!

I have a 3 yr old with ASD, ADHD, SI & SDD, he is on all kinds of meds, but @ night we give him 2 pills which is 6mcg's plus his Pediatrician prescribed Atarax as well. This does seem to work & he sleeps abt 6-8 hrs...I would ask your Dr as well to be sure, weight may make a difference as well....Good luck! Rachel

I have a 8 yr. Old she like to wait till my husband an I get good and asleep an she sneaks in our bed. I'm ready for her to stay in her own bed all night. We are coming up on night five. We've not been able to go to sleep before midnight. We've tried a reward system I've tried sitting her down and talking to her. Nothing is working. My husband an I are at a loss.

Most doctors do not understand or have any real idea of dosage. They go off of weight charts, etc. that are provided by the pharmaceutical companies. A Pharmacist has gone to school for years and has been trained to look at the drug interaction from all angles including weight, age, other prescriptions, activity levels etc. You better option would not be to talk with you doctor (though it never hurts to let them know what is going on) but to take the pharmacist's advice and then go to a health food/supplements store (like GNC) or get a prescription for a pure grade (pharmaceutical grade) of Melatonin.

Melissa,
Check into the above web site to find out more about melatonin. It is a natural hormone, but when we do not make enough, which seems to be the case with alot of autistic kids, it is safe to take a supplemental melatonin. My son took it when he was younger, but I'm not giving it to him now, even though he really needs it. Up some nights to late or wakes up and plays. My daughters give it to my grandkids, the ones that are a little to hipper for naps. I'm thinking of taking it myself, and I plan on starting it againg with my son. As the article explains, talk with a Dr. about giving it to your child. Hope this helps. :)

I was giving my 8 year old son melatonin, like the doctor told me, but then took him off of it. I was told it was bad for brain development because melatonin is a hormone. I am confused.

Every child is different. My daughter is 3 and I was told by two of her dr.'s that she can safely have up to 6mg at a time (though luckily she only uses half that much). My nephew is 10 and only needs 1mg at night. Good Luck!

Wall mart is not selling pure melitonin...I would bet half of that is filler. Go to a health food store or a doc, and get pharmicy grade. Please excuse my spelling. I will hope you sleep and nap.
