Hey wanted to share an idea that someone gave me years ago to lessen the stress of taking your autistic kid out in public.....we have a now 9 yr' old with low functioning/severe autism; several years ago (he was 4?) we flew to Maine, I was really worried because he was having meltdowns constantly...not potty trained, and several other issues. Anyway some lady told me about autistic business cards I could make myself to present to anyone during our travels that was bothered by our son's behavior. Anyway i used them and it does help alot...here is a copy of what we put on our son (Erik's) ca rd:
My name is Erik, I am 4 yrs. old and I have severe autism. Autism is a communication, social, developmental, and emotional disorder where I have trouble understanding my surroundings...things like noises and bright lights really bother me even causing physical pain... In my attempt to deal with things I may scream, cry, giggle, fidgit, etc....I'm not trying to misbehave, so please be patient with me as I struggle through these attempts. For more info.on autism and the other AS disorders please contact Autismspeaks.org or the Autism Society of America thank you
Anyway I hope this info can help some of you; I'd also love to hear any other tools you all may have
