Hi, My 10 year old son has high functioning autism and has always been limited on what he will eat. I am getting more concerned as he is becoming quite vague at school and is having trouble concentrating. His eyes are quite dartk underneath and is constantly getting sores around his mouth. I would like some recipes that are effective at hiding vegies and also any advice that has worked for others, thanks in advance

My daughter didn't have autism, but hated eating her vegies, So I tryed organic (after that I couldn't get her to stop)!

Hope that helps!

The purple maybe due to allergies (food or otherwise) I also heard that is a reaction to phenols. Julie Matthews (Nourshing Hope) has great resources. Jessica Seinfeld also has a book on hiding veggies. Don't know if you are doing the GF/CF diet but that truly helped my son. May also want to look into Vitamin B drops. Good Luck!

Jerry Seinfeld's wife has a cookbook out that has recipes that hides veggies. My son will not eat very many. What he DOES like is tomato soup and pizza. Maybe that will help with the mouth sores for your son? How about nutrional shakes? I also think you should give him a multivitamin but I have very little luck with that. I find one my son likes and before the bottle is even half finished he hates them.

Try a multivitamin, and make this part of his routine, or a protein multivitamin smoothie. He probably hates their texture. This is a sensory integration issue. He needs sensory integration therapy. He could also be very low on Vitamin B complex, which is why he's not eating. When Vitamin B's are low, we get anemic, and don't get hungry. I have Aspergers.

It is totally common for for ASD kids to limit thier food choices. My 14 year old (Aspergers) has never had vegetables other than the odd corn on a cob. He can even track vegetables down if they have been disguised. My 5 year old (Autistic) lives on Bread, Cereal,Cheese, Apples and Yogurt. You might try giving him the smallest cube of carrot or any vegie possible to try before he has his main meal. If he eats the carrot then he gets the 'good stuff'. The dark circles under the eyes sounds like Anaemia. Does he drink a lot of milk or take Vitamin C? Milk blocks the absorption of Iron, and we cant absorb Iron without Vitamin C. If he wont eat red meat to get the iron, he may need testing for anaemia followed by a supplement

Pediasure will help suppliment for those veggies, some kids are just hard to win over and then add Autism to that. That is a suggestion if all else fails.

you can also shred veggies up and put them in desserts...like i use carrots in my spice cake and stuff like that....my son never notices the difference and ive been doing this for years. i alwasy slip veggies in his dessert and then there is not fight. i also give him a daily vitamin.

is there a particular colour of food he likes ? some children only eat yellow food for example . You then need to find veg in the colour of food he likes, it may not be an issue for him the colour thing , worth looking at what he does like to see if there is a colour theme !!!

my son is 5 years old and wont. what his doc told me .was to give them same kind of veggies everyday for a week. and i know this isnt the healthest idea but it worked for my son. i would buy sweet peas put butter and suger in them. i did this everyday for a week and he started eating them. and then after that week i started putting less butter and suger in. but it helped me get him started on eating them. but i have only got as far as peas so far. good luck to you!

We go through this often with our 11 year old Dude. I give him a multi-vitamin every morning that he takes well. We also give him things like the V-8 fruit fusion. Dude will eat chilli, stew and soup and so I puree the heck out of veggies and 'hide' them in those meals. I also use some puree in my hamburger patties and other meat sauces. Thanksfully Dude really likes pizza so I can usually hidwe puree in or under the sauce too.
