If you have a 21+ y.o. and they attend a really good day program, would love to hear about the program and your location (city & state).

Our daughter will finish school in 2 years and we are thinking of moving since there is absolutely nothing here for her.

And this can't be done through DDD in NJ? I am clueless with all this. How would you get a coordinator in NY?

You can apply to any agency that has group homes. Once the person is living in NY they are entitled to NY services. Of course you'll want to do research on the agency you chose and you will need a medicaid service coordinator.

Cheryl so a person can be placed in NY without the family living there? I was saying I'd have to move to NY State if the services are better. How would an NJ family get there loved one placed in a NY group home? Thanks!

I know the services in NY are better than in NJ. I know several people that have family in NJ but their relative with developmental disabilities is in NY just over the border because the services are better.

New York has the best services for anyone with a developmental disability. I have worked for the same agency for the last 12 years. We have four day programs on our adult campus. A day treatment program, two day habs (different functioning levels and abilities) and a supported employment department. It's unfortunate but programs are being cut at this time, but NY still offers the most and best services out there.

Thanks! I will check out these organizations. So far, it looks like there are more parents looking than programs available.

Have you tried the Autism Society of America? (http://www.autism-society.org/site/PageS...) They normally have support groups in different areas and many have support groups just for parents of adults living with ASD or PDD. That could be a great place to find resouces. I would also try the austism speaks web site (http://www.autismspeaks.org/community/re...) their site had the best resource search and helped me a lot when I was looking for schools and therapists for my children.

Monroe, MI has an excellent Day program. Hope Network, and HOME Inc. I worked at HOME Inc., I was the Developer of the drop-in center. It's excellent there.
