Has anyone on here heard of nonverbal learning disability (NLD)?

My daughter was recently diagnosed and from what I have researched and been told by therapists it is a lot like aspergers. We are having a very hard time getting the school to recognize it and give her the help she needs to succeed. Any comments or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, I have. Author, Tish Cohen, wrote a book a couple of years ago called The Inside Out Girl. Its about a girl with NLD. Although the book is fiction, Cohen did a lot of research in order to depict the main character as true to the condition as possible. She met with several children with the diagnosis and had a child psychologist consult with her. Give the book a read, it might be helpful.

When Dude was diagnosed with ASD the first book I read was fiction, it helped to see someone else's 'story' play out.

As far as the school goes, its going to be your job to educate your daughter's team. You need to figure out what this diagnosis means for your daughter and then translate that into how the school responds to her needs.

This link http://www.ldrc.ca/contents/view_article... is a one page overview of NLD, preparing something like this for your child's education team might be benefical. It would provide a starting point, a general base of information for all the team members. You are going to have to become an advocate for her. Unless she ends up with an exceptional teacher, things won't just be handed to her, programs will not just be created for her and therapies won't just be offered to her.

Its your job, Mama ... and you can do it!
