I am amazed that it took so long foryou to get him diagnosed! In most schools if you demand in writing that your child be tested they have several months to meet your demands. It seems unfortunately that we as parents really have to read ed code so carfully in order to be fully informed of our parental rights. I am an educator and have a child on the spectrum. My child is on the mild side, but I do teach some that are much like you son. There are many resources(including) and books out there. It's overwhelming how the awareness of autism has led to an abundance of information. I encourage you to talk to your child's teachers as much as you can. Your child may never "catch up," but can be successful in his own wonderful way. I hope you find ways to take care of yourself. I think that many kids on the spectrum are very aware of the emotions of their caretakers. I know that my son responds much better to me when I am calm and happy. When it comes to homework, and his responsibility around the house my 6 year old is more likely to get stuff done when I work happily along side him. It is rough going at times, but I back off, and start up again. I'm rambling, but in short I want to say... Take care of yourself along the way. Deal with things in pieces instead of trying to take on the world. I really believe that it is a special mom who gets to have these special children. I think my son is perfect. God Bless, Janet
