Hiya, I am a few steps ahead of you as my Son is nearly 7,is autistic and was statemented at about 4.5 years old. I have to say that I can really sense and understand Liz's frustrations, but I think every comment here is valid! I cried my way thru the whole process whilst holding down a full-time very responsible job; it was tough! I then later fought to get my Son into our chosen Special School (he was in mainstream for about a year and a half) which was not our catchment School! It sounds like you are doing a great job, we should never give up fighting for our kids, they are so worth it!! I still feel isolated and desperate at times, so this forum is great, let me know if I can help at all.

I think everyone who is on this board is going through the whole nightmare of it, these kids do need help both through school and at home, no one denies that. I know my son has difficulties at school, teachers struggle too because they have other students, schools need to help these kids, in turn they help their staff help these kids better. So hopefully everyone here gets the help they need and get support no matter how "muddled" it is.

hi chrissy!i totally understand hunni!you are not alone, please add me as a friend if you would like to talk further or msg me.

my son is 5, adhd, asd, autistic, afraid of school, destructive, hurting himself and others inc teachers everyday, sprained a ta's wrist, floods toilets, classrm, breaks things, continiously switches lights/sockets on/off on.off, he self harms, doesnt eat, refuses to wear uniform. school have had several continious complaints, a pettition to get him out, he cant attend school trips unless i go, has a lsa a dinnertime, cos otherwise he would escape frm school, which he has tried and very nearly suceeded on several occasions.

we are waiting for a staement an to try meds for adhd. staement due sept 09. please god help him. if you contact your local authority ask for inclusion team....these are people who do statements.....tell them whats going on as there is exceptional circumstances funding availiable for schools to apply for the interim period. i have also told school of they dont get their arss in gear, get him help now i will go to local paper, my mp and then take lewis out of school!!!

pls contact me i have more info but so much to write!

lewis is also branded naughty, altho teachers/senco say they dont use this word, kids all over the school shout it at him everyday even in front of me.

dont bother taking him out of the school and placing him at another, because legally you as a parent can only change to another mainstream school, which is pathetic and as you know wil not help your son or mine. i have reserched this well...trust me!

school are responsible for sorting statement out with you, but they need to collect 6months worth of evidence, ibps, ieps, allsorts.

drs report, ed phy, salt, h.v reports are also needed!

pls get in contact so much to say!

keep your chin up

I don't think what you need to do is getting any statements. You need to help your son get better... Do statements matter more than seeing him well? Now that he's still at schooling age you can get excuses and exceptions. How about when he gets older and needs to socialize with any kinds of people in the society?

Accept that your child is different. But NEVER give in! Get help because I know your child can get well.

Are you in the UK? If you are, the best thing to do is contact an organisation called IPSEA (independent panel for special education advice) on 0800 0184016. It's a very busy number, but it's worth pressing redial till you get through.

You need to contact the school board. Every School system must provide services for your child. Our school system has a seperate building that works with the area schools to help get children the proper education. Ours is called Special Education Learning Facility. so see if your area has one like it. and dont be afraid to step up and let the school your working with now know that you dont like the way they are taking so long. it is in your rights. By law every school system must help you once he is diagnosed.

go to the school board if the principle and others at the school are dragging their feet. Also look up your rights for a parent with special needs children. You do have some. You should not have to change your childs schools because they are not doing their jobs. He has just as much right to be taught and to be at that school as any other child. Also check with the county they may have some programs you and your family can get involved in.

we are going through the same process, it's amazing how slow school system is. Go to the school coordinator or principle and say you want some help, shcool can't deny help. You could even request an IEP for him. If the school isn't going fast enough go to the school district offices and say you are looking for help from your school and you aren't getting it. We are going to our second meeting with our school so hopefully they will figure a plan out for our son. Good luck! Hope this is helpful.
