Christopher is going to be 9 in September. He was intergrated into a regular class last year, but that didn't go so well. Now he just goes for math art library and computer. He also goes on all the field trips with an assistant. This year one of my personal goals with him is for him to tie his shoes. We have tried all summer with no such luck. I feel bad cause he gets frustrated then it takes a while for him to calm down. Is there anyone out there who can give advice on how to teach him to tie his shoes.

To be honest, I'm glad I'm not the only one. My son is 9 and can't tie his shoes. He gets VERY frustrated when we ask him to. He starts OT soon and I hope the therapist can help.

I have to say thanks for this thread! My 8 year old son still can not tie his shoes. It took me so long to get him out of diapers that I refuse to make shoe-tying an issue because of the abundance of velcro and slip on shoes. I am more concerned about buttoning/snapping and zipping clothes. If you find something that works, let me know. :)

My son who is 9 JUST learned to tie his shoes. I started to think it would never happen. We got a shoe and calmly practiced together everyday, He learned the two bunny ear method. It still is not perfect, but in time.. we did it in short stints at a time, 5 mins every day

My son is soon to be 9 this Oct. He does not tie his shoes. I tried and tried to teach him, but he has no patience for this. I also noticed after he grew out of size 7 jeans, they switch to buttons. He also has a very hard time w/ that. Best of Luck!!!!!

My son is now 17. He still does not tie shoes. We buy velcro and slip on shoes. If it something you choose to focus on, I wish you the best of luck. For us, it was not worth the fights and tears.

I've been trying to get my daughter to tie her shoes since she started school. She's now 14, and still can't master the skill. I agree with the other mother who said to just choose your battles. We buy slip ons and elastic laced sneakers and avoid clothing that has to be tied. Sooner or later, she'll be ready and she will do it.

Really? I skipped that battle all together. We had so much else to deal with. We have always bought him slip on shoes or shoes with velcro. I still have to check his shoes but basically he is independent putting them on and off. Even some adults hate tying their shoes so there are plenty of slip ons to find. Any battle I can skip, I do. I just told the school I wanted to focus on other issues - things I couldn't avoid.
