I am living in the Philippines and I am just wondering how much an IQ test cost? We are considering out son to be tested in the future.

Yes my son has ASD and was diagnosed when he was 1 year and 10 months old. But he seems to be advanced in his cognitive skills. He is currently placed in an early intervention class to address his social delays and receives OT and speech therapy services. My husband and I are wondering that he might be needing a different approach or educational services in the future. BTW, we are worried that he might be hyperlexic too, coz at three years, he could already sight read some words without me teaching him. So there is still a puzzle that is yet to be solved. We are thinking that an IQ test could better understand him and his needs.

Hee, in Ontario, if there are issues with your child, there would be evaluations by all sorts of other tests first, and it would all be covered under OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance). How old is your son ? I also think they test IQ differently for children. My boy is waiting to take a psychometric test (to find his strenghts and weaknesses).
Good luck- I'm sorry I don't know how much an actual test would cost...

Here it seems like my school simply did assesments in each area and never gave me an official diagnosis, just a rating in each developmental area. They told me he didn't need anything else till he is 8. As for private testing. A low end test was $500 and high end was $1200 depending on a sliding scale for income at the place I talked to.

My understanding is that each state has to comply with federal laws for special education, and if they don't, they lose Federal funding. The term "school psychologist" should be a person who is licensed as such, and is qualified to test a child for any diagnosis listed in the DSM-IV. If you can't get a straight answer, contact your State Board of Education about this. If your son has autism, it needs to be treated NOW, and this is within the purview of Special Education. Good Luck!

Dr. Rockhill, is there a federal statute about testing? Our school psychologist refuses to test my son because of his autism.

It does depend on where you live, and I don't know what it would be in the Phillippines, but in the States, for a complete IQ, a clinical evaluation and written report, the cost would range between $600 and $800 (US dollars). Total time for a good evaluation and time to write the report is between 5 to 7 hours. In the States, if your child is 3 or older, you can speak with the Special Education coordinator at you local school district. If there are developmental problems documented by your pediatrician, the school district is obligated to pay for testing. Again, I don't know what it is like in the Phillippines, but it's worth checking into.

If you are in Ontario, the cost for a full psych-ed assessment (as they are referred to here) is approximately $1200.

Is your son autistic? We have yet to find someone who is willing to test our autistic child. From what I've heard, you might expect to pay a couple hundred dollars.
