my first suggestion would be to contact the Autism Society of America. Ask for the First 100 Days pack. Then go to his school and request an IEP. Also, most states have an Autism Society of their own. This is a really really good resource. They have professionals who will go with you to the IEP meeting so that your son recieves all the services possible. Oh! IEP= Individualized Education Plan. This is a plan that schools follow to make sure your son recieves an education that will do him the most good. It includes speech, OT, therapies he may need, behavioral goals, things like that. Again Autism Society of America has a great info packet on IEP's if you need one. Also, your son may qualify for Disability to help with the added cost of care for him. Alot of Autistic children do. Also, I would suggest reading the American's with Disabilities Act and the IDEA as well as the No Child Left Behind Act. I'm sorry if I seem to pilling alot of "homework" on you. But, these are some really important things to know to help advocate for your son. :) The other thing I would definetly suggest is to ask your state Autism Society or pediatrician if they know of any case managers in your area. This has been a huge blessing for us. A case manager is a professional who meets with your family , learns all your sons needs and then finds all the resources local to you that he can use for you. They do alot of the leg work so you can focus on your child. And most are covered by insurance! It's wonderfull. I have 3 kids on the spectrum. Ages 7, 5, and 3. We have been living with the diagnosis for several years. Any questions or if you need an ear feel free to message me. :) hope some of this helps.
